No boondocking is allowed in the Greer Recreation Area so your choices are one of two Forest Service Campgrounds if you want to be close to Greer. We decided on the large Rolf C Hoyer campground because they had free showers. They had two buildings with four very nice individual shower rooms in each building, centered in the employee loop near the campground entrance. With 100 campsites in the campground, the eight showers seemed minimal, but I never saw a lineup.

The campground has very nice crushed gravel roads and parking pads. Two loops (25 sites) are held back from the reservation system. The host working at the front entrance says they never run out of first-come, first-served sites. Even though it was a late June weekend when we visited, the campground was less than 30 percent full.

We’ve been spoiled and this campground reminded us why we prefer small, out-of-the-way places. The two families that selected sites near us decided to continue talking (and hollering) well past quiet time. At least they were having fun. In addition to the family noise, at least two of the loops are impacted by highway noise as well.

There is occasionally a bit of "teaser" cell reception that fades in and out - essentially unusable on Verizon or AT&T phones. One of the parking lots across the road at Greer Lakes could get a boostable signal resulting in 4 bars of Verizon 4G with the amplifier.

Sites are clean and many are well designed, but spacing is close enough that you'll likely get to know your neighbor.

We spent 3 nights here in late June and surprisingly, the campground was only 50% full. Access to the town of Greer is very easy and there are hiking opportunities near the campground too. There are nice showers near the entrance and bathrooms throughout the various loops. All of the parking pads appear to be quite level and they are all gravel. Most of the sites have good shade which is nice when you need to be out of the sun, however if you rely on solar panels there are many sites that would have only a few hours of direct sun for charging.

There is a free dump station here along with a clean water source. The staff was friendly and most of the campers were quiet aside from a few that felt the need to run generators for a few hours at a time. Reservations are accepted and there are 2 loops set aside for walk ups.

Verizon cell service was very poor in the campground and we were able to go to the parking lot for the reservoir across from the campground to get a couple bars of LTE service.

It's really surprising that this campground wasn't full over the weekend. It's lovely and only four hours from the heat of Phoenix. More people should escape here! There's tons of hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and horse trails all around. And it's beautiful!

The campground is huge and has plenty of room for big rigs. The roads aren't narrow and there aren't low branches to watch for. The roads are gravel--and so are the site driveways--so it can get dusty, but most campers were courteous and drove slowly to keep down the dust. The restrooms and showers were very clean, and the dump station allows for four to dump/fill water at one time. Very convenient when leaving on a Sunday morning, I'm sure.

The campground was quiet, and the skies were filled with stars. We had a very peaceful stay.

Each site has a fire ring with a grill. Some grills are better than others. You can reserve a site ahead of time or take your chances that one of 91 will be available. Since a weekend in late June wasn't full, I think you'd be okay to show up. One loop (Bear Loop) is first come, first served only.

We enjoyed Hoyer Campground over Labor Day weekend of 2020. We had a GREAT time! The campground itself is huge and full of wildflowers. There is a dump/fill station and water spigots scattered throughout. It's very close to "downtown" Greer, and an easy walk, ride, or drive to 3 GORGEOUS fishing reservoirs. The scenery literally left me breathless.

I'm not sure why this webpage lists a max length of 32' - there is PLENTY of room and are PLENTY of sites to accommodate large vehicles!! That is inaccurate.

I am already trying to figure out when we can go back - what a beautiful little area and campground!!

The only down side is there were no generator hours - and we were around people who literally ran theirs 24/7, which was a huge bummer. I have no problem with people using them here or there, but we couldn't even leave our windows open at night because it was so obnoxious. Loudest campfires ever at night, too - with the super loud brrrummmmm of the generator going strong. We enjoy getting in the forest and dry camping and enjoying as much QUIET as we can! Not the fault of the campground, though, just hope you get better neighbors then we did!

Big campground with nice shower house, we’ll maintained roads, water and dump but each parking padsite is built up such that walk up and down steep slope to get in and out of the RV.
$30 a night plus $15 a night for the tow vehicle. Seemed excessive, especially considering we’re in a class c motor home. Once set, leveled, slides out, etc we don’t drive that around the area any more than people with a travel trailer drag that around on day trips.
Constant traffic though the camp roads because almost all sites are on the same one-way road loop.
Next time I would go to the Benny Creek Campground instead. Quieter, larger more level sites, and I don’t need the shower/dump anyway.

I arrived for a 3 day stay, however, no cell service. I tried my cell booster and still was unable to call or text. When traveling alone it is important to have service in case of emergency. I had to leave. It looks like it is a very nice campground.
