“Jurassic Park 2 filming location”

Imagine walking through a narrow canyon where the walls are completely covered by luxuriant ferns and mosses and are dripping with moisture.  That describes Fern Canyon, an unforgettable natural wonder that Steven Spielberg chose as a location for Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World. This level trail of about one mile follows Home Creek as it courses through the forest. This modest stream has over the eons carved a deep (50 to 80 feet) canyon through the sedimentary soils. The vertical walls sprout an amazing variety of ferns (five different kinds) and other moisture-loving plants and mosses. Depending on the time of year, there is a constant drip-drip of water trickling down the canyon walls.

While exploring Redwoods area, we heard someone referring to Fern Canyon as the place where the movie of Jurassic Park 2 was filmed, so my children were strongly insisting to visit it as soon as possible.

This place is just too beautiful to describe with words. We loved every bit of it. The nature surrounding us, the sounds of the birds, the small bridges we had to walk by so we could get over the water areas..everything!

It is not a long tour but you will surely be amazed by the amount of greenery..you almost feel you are in the jungle.

Don't miss it.!

Fern Canyon is – hands down – my favorite hiking trail in Redwoods National and State Parks. It’s also probably the most popular trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, so remember the early bird gets the best chance to commune with the trees.

It is short, but sweet…and if you love it as much as I did you might even want to walk it twice. Gentle flowing water, a canyon lined with five-finger ferns…I felt like I was in a dream. Every turn…every nook…it was more beautiful than the next.

Many people follow the river to the end of the trail, and then turn back, but the trail is actually a balloon. I encourage you to climb the stairs and make the trek back through the redwoods (following the AllTrails route.)

Fern Canyon is absolutely gorgeous and is a must see in the Redwoods area. The trail is easy 0.1 miles. Kids will have fun jumping in the streams and climbing up logs.

Well worth the drive that's a little out of the way! I took my 7 year old out there and we were both able to do the hike. We went way beyond where I believe most go, past tree barricades where the canyon walls disappear. Started to realize we weren't equipped to deal with whatever lived out there and turned around. :) GORGEOUS!

Otherworldly. Went over New Years and had the place to ourselves. So lush, green & peaceful. Loved scrambling over rocks and hopping through the creek as we made our way through the canyon.

Bring shoes that can get wet. SUCH a beautiful hike. One of the scenes from a Jurassic Park was filmed here.

Bit off the beaten path but apparently totally worth the trip! A short hike from the parking area will you take you to an area that looks straight out of Jurassic Park.
