“a peaceful end to a violent life”

Glenwood Springs most famous outlaw rests somewhere in Linwood Cemetery, though no one knows the exact location. Hike the short trail to “Doc’s” marker, and peruse other historic grave sites. Hiking to the Doc Holliday grave marker is a must-do activity while visiting Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The dentist turned gambler and gunslinger died from tuberculosis in Glenwood Springs in November of 1887. The famous friend of lawman Wyatt Earp, Doc hoped the hot springs water would cure him. It did not, he was 36 when he died. The life and times of John Henry “Doc” Holliday have become the stuff of American legend and folklore. No visit to Glenwood Springs would be complete without a trek to his marker in Linwood Cemetery which is easy to find thanks to the signs that point the way. The marker is typically adorned with mementos including coins and playing cards. The trailhead is located in downtown Glenwood Springs at the corner of 12th Street and Bennett Avenue. Street parking is available in the residential neighborhood. Follow the signs and the well-worn path to the Doc Holliday grave marker. Signs also mark the location of other points of interest including the grave of the bandit Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan.

Beautiful little cemetery on a hill! Fun for pictures (although I wish there weren't fences around some of the graves). The half mile hike up the hill isn't terrible, but a little more than I was expecting. It's not far from the highway, but the short hike will take a few minutes (probably took me about 20, but I'm super slow).

Worth the effort to hike up to the grave site. The main picture shown above is the old headstone and has since been replaced with the vertical headstone with the correct dates. His actual remains are not buried where his gravestone is but it is on record that he's buried somewhere in the cemetery. I heard they do some haunted hike up to the cemetery every Halloween and the locals say it's very cool and creepy. There are discrepancies around his actual burial spot. Here's one article on the subject: http://www.tombstonetimes.com/stories/where.html

Awesome scenery! The view of Glenwood Springs is spectacular. The hike was something once you got off the first gravel road. My husband, who is disabled had our 11 week old puppy, and they had to take their time. Plus it was 95 degrees. But once we got to the cemetery, it was more than I thought. Didn't realize it was a whole Potter's Field. We enjoyed walking around looking at the different gravesites before we headed back down the hill. There are two entrances, we took the one off of 11th street. Not sure where the other entrance is, but a nice neighbor of the trailhead said the other way had other views and a wishing well.

An easy drive off the highway, but a pretty good hike. It's not far, but could be a challenge to someone not used to the altitude or not in at least okay physical shape. Otis fairly quick to get there and totally worth it.

No legal place to park for this. It's probably great if you're a local and can walk to it but I couldn't find anywhere to park in this neighborhood

I personally love old cemeteries and this one was no different. However....be advised it is a hike to get to the cemetery. And if it’s a hot day, like the day I went the short hike felt like a million miles. Lol. But once I got up there I was pleasantly surprised at the view and the history.

Great pit stop to stretch your legs. The kids did great (3, 10) even though they really didn't care about the history of it. We tried to tell them stories about why "Doc" was so infamous, which helped a little. Really fascinating to see the life span of some 100 years ago - we found one individual who lived to be 90!

The entrance into this place is right in the middle of a neighborhood which kinda through is for a loop but was easy to find. Took us about 20 mins to hike up to the cemetery. I am not in very good shape at the moment so we stop for a few mins on the way up. Definitely was expecting such a steep hike up but it wasn’t terribly difficult. Once we got up there the view were amazing! Looking down on glen wood and the surrounding mountains was breathtaking. There are signs that point you towards doc’s grave so it is pretty easy to find. While seeing his site was pretty cool it was also cool to see all the other tome stones. All ranging from the early 1800’s to mid 1900’s. It takes you bag in time for a moment. Definitely worth the hike!
