“Believed to be over 5,000 years old”
Galveston Island State Park, in Galveston County, is in the city of Galveston on the west end of Galveston Island. It is a 2,013.1-acre site that was acquired in 1969 from private owners under the State Parks Bond Program and was opened in 1975. Galveston Island is believed to be approximately 5,000 years old and has had an interesting history during the past 500 years. It is generally believed that Cabeza de Vaca and his crew were shipwrecked here in 1520, and eventually made their way from the island to colonies in Mexico. The Lafitte brothers, fleeing the prosecution of pirates in the United States, established a government here in 1817, with visions of creating a "Manhattan on the Gulf." Commerce did thrive here, but major storms in 1867, 1871, 1875 and 1886 greatly slowed progress. The great storm of 1900 devastated the island, killing 5,000 to 10,000 people, and prompted the construction of the seawall that protects the northern half of the island.
What a hidden gem! We stayed in the beach side. Our site was #11 and it was about 100’ from the beach path. We could feel the breeze. Unfortunately the beach side is shutting down on Sept 3, 2019 per their website for renovations. The lake side is still open though. Beautiful area. In the morning took my coffee down the beach path with my chair and watched the sun come up. Great place.
Clean park. Close to the beach. Clean beach. Enjoyed our overnight stay. Really quiet. Clean bathrooms.
First time here bringing our granddaughter on a beach trip. We had a wonderful time! Wish the sites were full hook up!!!! Very nice park...could use some upgrades but I think those are planned! Very clean and very friendly staff! So much to do in the area!
Beach was awesome. We went during the week and had the beach to ourselves. The parks bathrooms and showers were extremely clean and stay was pleasant. We camped by the beach side and felt the breeze coming from the gulf. Extremely quiet at night.
This place was great. We stayed an extra night! The bathrooms were the cleanest we (and other RVers we talked to) have seen on the road! Nice and quiet little area, neat little places to walk your doggies. The center of the camping circle had lots of sand spurs and that was the only place to avoid with the pups! Really great birding as well! We enjoyed ourselves.
Pros: Well-maintained park, with clean bathrooms. If you're spending the night there is a 10PM quiet time, but this isn't strictly adhered to.
Cons: Some RVers have reported seeing lots of rats. I can't confirm this however as I didn't visit at night.
