“History of Friday Harbor”
If you arrived on San Juan Island in 1894 you would have witnessed Friday Harbor as a fledgling town where organized ferry service would not exist for another thirty years. The latest census would have shown 550 residents in all of San Juan County. Farming was necessary for sustenance on this isolated island. In that year, James King had completed construction of his home and his farm would eventually grow to 445 acres. The years would pass and in 1966, what remained of this once expansive farm (a little over an acre) would become the San Juan Historical Museum. Take a step back in time and visit the last remaining historic farmstead in the town of Friday Harbor. Experience island life as it was over a century ago through our historic structures, unique exhibits and living history. The San Juan Historical Society and Museum…preserving the history of Friday Harbor and San Juan Island since 1961.
