“Central Florida's natural, pure oasis”

"Nestled at the head of the Wekiva River lies a tropical oasis. This is what Central Florida used to look like. Wekiwa Springs State Park is, in many ways, a trip to the past, to when the Timucuan Indians roamed Central Florida. And it's just an hour from Orlando.  In addition to camping, there are thirteen miles of well-maintained trails, perfect for the hiking, biking or horseback riding outdoor enthusiast. The Wekiva River itself offers plenty to do to cool down, from kayaking to canoeing to snorkeling in the spring. There are rental concessions if you don't have your own canoe or kayak. 42 million gallons of pure spring water flow from Wekiwa Springs to Wekiwa Springs Run, every day. The water then joins Rock Springs Run and forms upper Wekiva River. In 1941, the Apopka Sportsman Club purchased the land, which is currently Wekiwa Springs State Park. The area was used for hunting and fishing until it was sold to the state of Florida in 1969. The Florida Park Service Ranger Academy provides twice-yearly training for Florida's park rangers. The academy moved from O'Leno State Park to Wekiwa Springs State Park in 1977. President Lyndon Johnson signed the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System into law in 1968, and this helped to preserve rivers that have exceptional natural, cultural and recreational importance. Rock Springs Run State Reserve and Wekiva Falls Park are protected under the act. This is a very popular park on weekends. To ensure entrance into the park, we recommend arriving early, otherwise, the parking area will be full and you may not be able to enter. Options for camping include a full facility campground and primitive camping areas. Canoe and kayak rentals are available.

My wife loves canoeing!! She claims you can see places you are not able to see while touching your feet on the ground. I think she was talking about Wekiwa Springs State Park.

Adventure, beauty, peace and harmony are hugging nature in this place. Absolutely gorgeous experience!

The only negative was the long lines we had to wait to get there!
Heard from other visitors that one must go there very early in order to avoid it!

Great park for kayaking, hiking, and camping! I have been there several times and have never been disappointed.

I can't give a full review of this park because we "suffered" it during a torrential downpour for two days.

That said, I only have good things to say about what we did experience, namely our campsite.

Very large lots, even bigger than most Florida State Parks. We could see our neighbors to the left but there was tons of woods between us and everyone else. At one point, while the family was out grocery shopping, a knock came at my little aluminum door. I opened it to find a ranger.

"If a tornado comes through, run to the bathroom." I agreed with him, but wondered how I'd fit the Airstream through those little doors.

Nice staff and beautiful surroundings, just bummed I didn't get more time to look around the park itself.

I also grabbed a shower while I was here in the bathrooms, and they were as clean as you might expect from a very insect-laden state. The only thing I found weird was that the way the shower was setup, no shower curtain, just a door, you could pretty easily see in and out of the shower stalls. On the other hand, no one was ever in the bathroom the entire time I was there...

We stayed here for 6 nights during the Christmas Holiday 2014 while visiting with family. The state park is surrounded by suburbia but other than being able to see some rooftops, it didn't intrude. The camping loops are set back into the park, down a long road and away from the day use areas. The entrance to the park is gated and requires a code to enter after hours. Grocery stores and shopping are only minutes outside of the gate. Disney and other Orlando tourist sites were about an hour or so away.

Site 21 was 65 feet long, along the outside of the loop, and plenty wide for our Airstream and TV. There was a picnic table and fire ring, 30amp power, water, and sewer. The ground was mixed sand and shells (?). Watch out for the ants! It did not take long for them to climb up a cooler we had sitting next to our rig and start hunting for a way to get in. Dumpsters were located at the entrance to the loop. The rangers and camp hosts were friendly and monitored the loops frequently. One evening a group of 12 or so young people were having a party at the campsite next to us but by 10pm they were gone, so we assumed the Rangers had asked them to leave.

We didn't get a chance to check out the Springs (available for swimming year round) or any of the walking trails due to a combination of a leaking water heater, rainy weather, and family obligations. We also did not use the bath house or other amenities.

Campsite review: Wekiwa Springs State Park Campground
Website:floridastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/wekiwa-springs-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=FL&parkId=281080
Address: 1800 Wekiwa Cir, Apopka, FL 32712
Dates stayed: June 4-6, 2018
Site occupied: 046
Cost: $30/night

Camping at Wekiwa Springs is camping as I like it best. It’s quiet, people have an activity if they want it, and the sites are large and comfy. Previously we had visited Blue Springs, and this park is similar. The Springs are really busy during the day, and with good reason--they are beautiful and cool. Perfect for a Florida summer.

Our arrival was painless as I had reserved a site via Reserve America, and the sites are a good value at only $30 per night. We pulled in to the park and were so happy to see lots of beautiful pine trees and smell a bunch of campfires. The campground has two loops, full hookups, and a dump station. Our loop was quiet but full, and the other campers were a nice mix of retirees and families with young children.

We were able to shop at a very close Publix (there were three to choose from), and, with firewood purchased from the rangers, we had everything we needed.

Our visit to the Springs reminded us that even though our campsite was secluded, we are very near to a large population. The Springs were crowded to the point where I felt like there were too many people, but the kids were not bothered.

The springs kick out some 45 million gallons of water per day, so the current is intense. Ellie and Ez loved trying to swim straight down to the bottom of the springs. They also enjoyed floating around on their donuts.

The campsite also has a lake, a canoe livery, and many walking trails. We biked a little bit, and that was really fun. The roads do have a surprising amount of elevation though. Another awesome surprise was the wildlife--we saw two deer and were awoken by a wild turkey!

We’d definitely stay here again, and we’d want to go canoeing. We weren’t able because we planned on going our last morning, but it was raining.

We reserved Wekiwa Springs only because we needed to fill 8 days in January. We ended up really enjoying this park and will stay there again. Our site (#5), although spacious, was very difficult to get into with our 43' fifth wheel because it was a perpendicular turn in instead of an angled one. Other than that, it was easy access and plenty spacious. We went canoeing on Wekiva River and were pleasantly surprised to come upon Wekiva Island, where they had a full bar, food and plenty of space to lounge by the river. There were also miles and miles of trails to explore.
*They do allow tent campers to camp right next to Rvers and we had rowdy neighbors for a couple of days. That was probably the most frustrating part of our stay*

Very nice State Park! Horrible traffic getting there. Orlando avoided highway improvement for decades and now they’re doing it all at once. And it was Friday. And it was near rush hour.

Wonderful. Trails and roads for bicycle. Site was about 100 yards from Main Street so some traffic noise but not bad. Definetly stay again. Nice swim area in Wekiwa Spring. Sprint LTE was weak but adequate most of the time.

Unfortunately, we had a LOT of rowdy neighbors who paid little if any attention to the park rules. Quiet time is supposed to start at 11 but, frankly, I don't think rowdy time ever ended. All. Night. Long. on Friday night and spilling over into Saturday morning, Noon and night. I don't think they ever slept.

Had this been our first visit to a Florida State Park, we might not have gone on to explore a dozen other of the Florida State Parks in the area that accommodate RV's. That would have been a shame because we have enjoyed other Florida parks in the area.

If this review concerns you, try close-by Lake Louisa State Park or Lake Griffin State Park: an entirely different scene with campers who actually camp as opposed to a mob of people just looking for a place to be drunk.

About a week after we stay at a Florida park, we get a survey which asks a number of questions. One of them is "Did you feel safe?". The answer here is a resounding "NO!". I arrived right at 3 and was set up by 4, before most of the drinkers arrived to spoil the scene. By 9PM I had basically pulled everything back in the RV for fear of it being stolen or shot at then stayed inside for the rest of the weekend.

There was zero social distancing, one of the best parts (up until this visit) of camping in the first place. Sites here seemed a bit closer together than other parks but that might have been just my reaction to the scene and those spoiling it for others.

I had two other bookings in the future for this park which I have canceled. There are just too many great parks in the Florida system. This is not one of them.
