When the New River Gorge Bridge was completed on October 22, 1977, a travel challenge was solved. The bridge reduced a 40-minute drive down narrow mountain roads and across one of North America's oldest rivers to less than a minute. When it comes to road construction, mountains do pose a challenge. In the case of the New River Gorge Bridge, challenge was transformed into a work of structural art - the longest steel span in the western hemisphere and the third highest in the United States.
The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most photographed places in West Virginia. The bridge was chosen to represent the state on the commemorative quarter released by the U.S. Mint in 2006. In 2013, the National Park Service listed the New River Gorge Bridge in the National Register of Historic Places as a significant historic resource.

Hands down a very cool stop! The kids were impressed and we all enjoyed hiking offside of the road. We also liked walking across the reconstructed lower bridge that was in the navigation.
Great stop on the family road trip! The workout climbing up and down the stairs was much needed...
I was catching flak for driving 45 minutes out of our way to go see this, but it was a hit with all ages. Beautiful driving over it, and being able to walk down for some picturesque views was awesome. Highly recommend getting off the interstate on your way to it and seeing some of the old coal towns (and some still thriving) to get a true understanding of WV if you aren't local.
Make the stop! Beautiful views, and the stairs get your blood flowing again after sitting in the car for too long.

Such a cool stop! From the visit center, we went down a lot of steps to an overlook of the bridge from below. After taking our time getting back up, we checked out the visitor center, which was super informative and have room full of photographs and history.
Was traveling on 64 and decided I needed to see this bridge. So glad I took the time to take the detour. The route took me down 20+ miles of windy roads through rural WV - something I would have never experienced otherwise and it was just absolutely beautiful. The Bridge itself is magnificent. I didn’t have time for the trails and stairs but just standing at the first lookout and taking in this amazing and beautiful structure along with the drive through the back roads of a magnificently beautiful State… definitely worth the additional time!! Im on an 1800 miles in 3 days road trip, so the should say something!
Very cool place! Wish I had more time to do everything it offers.
I remember having to cross this bridge on many trips as a kid. All I could think of while going across was: “Dang, that’s a nice view!” And later: “Dang, how did anyone build that?”
The New River Gorge is a gorgeous place to stop, learn some history, check out some gorgeous views and stretch your legs. I would not recommend this place as a day trip but, as a stop on a larger escapade, it is truly fun and magnificent!
