“one of America's most haunted hotels”
The Stanley Hotel, known for its architecture, magnificent setting, and famous visitors, may possibly be best known today for its inspirational role in the Stephen King's novel, "The Shining." This Colorado hotel has been featured as one of America's most haunted hotels and with the numerous stories from visitors and staff, The Stanley Hotel continues to "shine" today, as it did in 1909 when first opened. Forced by poor health to move West, F.O. Stanley and his famous Steamer arrived in Estes Park in 1903. Finding the town lacking in amenities, F.O. set out to change the local economy. On the 160 acres he purchased from Lord Dunraven, Stanley first built the main building of the hotel, one of 11 buildings in the original complex. Many of those original buildings remain in use today on the remaining 55 acres. Estes Park is the gateway to the Rocky Mountain National Park full of lush forests, thriving wildlife, and over 300 miles of hiking trails. From horseback riding to mountain biking, there is no shortage of outdoor activities to keep everyone in the family entertained. Enjoy the majestic scenery of the Rockies and the unique Colorado lodging The Stanley offers. There is no hotel in Estes Park more appealing and mysterious. According to legend Ms. Elizabeth Wilson (who was once a former chief housekeeper at the Stanley Hotel) is still assisting guests to this day… only she died in the 1950s. Many who have stayed over night at the hotel in room 217 say the the former housekeeper has a history of unpacking bags, turning the beds down, and even tucking guests in at night. Yikes.
One of my favorite places to stay - it's posh enough that you know you're in a 5-star hotel. It's spirited enough to earn its haunted fame. It's offbeat enough to make accessing one of the newest national parks easy and enjoyable. The price is high (haunted rooms cost an extra per-night-premium) which can deter many, but their food is fantastic and their tours are highly entertaining. It's worth a stop at the very least.
Great stories, beautiful hotel, and great service.
I stay at the Stanley Hotel every year. It's one of my favorite places to stay in Colorado. The views are fantastic especially in the winter. The hotel staff is very nice and accommodating. Of course, it's known for being the influence behind Stephen King's "The Shining" and there is a gift shop inside the hotel to pickup a copy and buy other trinkets. If you're in the area you can stop by for one of their ghost tours or ghost hunts. Some of it's a little far fetched for my taste but it's still entertaining. The bar is nice. My only issue with the hotel is the restaurant inside. I've ordered room service and had no one show up with my order. I had to go downstairs and reinstate that I had placed one and was greeted with less than ideal attitudes. However, the bar staff waited on me while I was waiting for my order was very nice. Overall, I would recommend staying here. Especially if you love history and listening to spooky tales about the hotel. I stay every year and plan on continuing to do so.
We spent two nights in room 215. The room was more than I had thought it would be. There isn’t air conditioning but we expected this as the Stanley Hotel is a historic hotel and keeping it original outweighs have AC. The hotel does supply fans which were helpful.
I highly recommend the night tour. It was fantastic! Our guide was awesome and we plan to do it again when we return!
Even if you're not staying in the Stanley Hotel, it's a great place to explore on a tour. Not only does this beautiful Colonial Revival hotel have a haunted history, it’s also home to an unexpectedly beautiful love story. While the Stanley Hotel is arguably most famous for its haunted happenings, its rich backstory and role in Estes Park’s development are equally fascinating. We spent a wonderful morning learning all about the hotel’s creator, Freeland O. Stanley and the impact he and his wife, Flora, had on the surrounding area.
Correction not the Motel6. It was some other midrange hotel.
Great place. Peaceful and relaxing. But the hotel is using the exact same hair and body lotion as Motel6. Tha is not right.
We stayed at the Stanley Hotel during June 2013 for a family wedding. Just staying at this grand old hotel was treat. The accommodations were nice, although the room (in the main building) did not have air conditioning. Between no air and our fourth floor room facing the west, the evenings were very warm.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, I highly recommend the Night Ghost Tour. It combines the general history of the Stanley with the hotel's haunted history. Our tour guide told my wife and I about paranormal experiences she had in our room.
I was so excited to stay here and I'm still happy we did, but I wanted to warn other people so they know what to expect. It's a very old hotel with creaking floors and smaller rooms with no AC. So to be there in the middle of July wasn't the most comfortable night of our vacation. It's also a tourist hotspot, which is great when you're the tourist and not so much when you're an overnight guest. We were in the room right next to 217 and the tours were outside our door all day. I think the Lodge building is better for privacy. That said, the architecture, grounds, and restaurants are amazing. I couldn't stop taking pictures of everything. Cascades has great food and drinks and over 900 types of whiskey.
Estes Park is a nice place, but very cramped and busy. Driving anywhere is a pain. And don't forget that reservations need to be made for more than just your room. The tours were booked, the illusionist that was there was booked, the Twin Owls Steakhouse nearby was booked. That's our fault, so I'm just trying to warn others so they don't make the same mistake.
