“over 400,000 burial spaces”
The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery lies in the northwestern area of the former Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, approximately 50 miles south of Chicago. Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is named after the 16th President of the United States and founder of the National Cemeteries. In the midst of the Civil War, on July 17, 1862 President Lincoln's signature enacted the law authorizing the establishment of national cemeteries for the soldiers who die in the service of the country. During the Civil War there were 14 national cemeteries opened pursuant of this legislation. The 982-acre cemetery provides 400,000 burial spaces.
A humble visit to this place will make you appreciate the sacrifices that these men and women gave to our country. Stop by and offer a prayer of thanks to them.
God Bless America.
This place, although it is not for spending your time doing activities as it is a cemetery, it holds the memories of a great amount of soldiers that sacrificed their lives.
It is worth visiting if you like history and if you want to feel the chills to your body when thinking how many people and families serviced this country.
You can still see family members visiting the graves of their loved ones.
Very touching experience.
My grandpa is here. I visit a couple times a year, usually right around sunset. The grounds are well maintained. And it's a very pretty place.
My grandfathers are buried here
