“Overlooking the beautiful Ohio River”
The Rose Hotel at Elizabethtown is 200 years old and still overlooks the Ohio River and still offers a night's lodging as does the River Rose Inn Bed & Breakfast next door. The Rose Hotel was a respite for the earliest European travelers on the Ohio. It is now owned by the State of Illinois which leases to a bed and breakfast type operator. Breakfast includes a big plate of sausage and gravy, fresh off a large wood cookstove by a woman in period costume. The Grand Rose is reportedly haunted by former owner Sarah Rose. She is said to linger beyond the grave. Her apparition has been seen walking in the second-floor hallways as well as climbing the stairs. Folks also have reported hearing a disembodied female voice and finding that objects that have been moved during the night!
