Welcome to Apple River Fort State Historic Site in Elizabeth, Illinois. The town was named for the heroines of the battle named Elizabeth, and Abraham Lincoln camped outside the fort in early June, 1832 with his militia unit. Apple River Fort State Historic Site, located in Elizabeth, Illinois, is the site of one of the battles fought during the Black Hawk War. Black Hawk and his 200 warriors attacked the hastily erected fort on June 24, 1832. You are welcome to visit the fort site and also the Interpretive Center, which is next to U.S. Hwy 20.
