“A rare find in El Paso”
Tom’s Folk Cafe is a small, eclectic, free-spirited café you would expect to stumble upon in Austin or maybe San Diego but not necessarily in El Paso, Texas. Perhaps that’s what makes this unexpected gem such an enjoyable nook to get away to on a Saturday afternoon away from the hoopla of Cincinnati Street and the clamor of I-10. Tom’s serves up Southern classics with a modern spin like their almost-too-good Crawfish Mac ‘n Cheese ($12) and Shrimp and Grits ($15). The café takes a farm-to-table approach to their fresh cuisine, utilizing locally sourced breads, meats, produce, nuts, honey and wine. My only complaint is that a few dishes I’ve tried were so overwhelmed with crushed red pepper they neared inedible – so if you aren’t too keen on that extra spicy kick, ask them to turn it down a notch! When the cold weather hits El Paso (yes, it does in fact get a bit frigid here!), Tom’s offers a winter menu in addition to their standard menu which only makes that critical meal decision even more difficult. When it warms up, grab a table on the small porch, but get there soon since there are no reservations and very limited seating. I recommend going on a sunny Saturday afternoon or if you’re up for some live jams, check out their “Southern Fried Sundays” featuring live music, food specials and $2 beers…maybe we’ll see you there!
One of my favorites restaurants in El Paso, I love the pork chops and the braised short ribs.
