“watch out for the giant head!”

Scioto Park is an 218-acre park with views of the Scioto River Valley, plus boating, fishing & hiking trails. Inside Scioto Park is a very unique monument of Chief Leatherlips. This was crafted from slabs of limestone mortared together near the area where he died. The monument is approximately 12 feet high and the head is open on the top and extended back along its sides, creating a small enclosure which enables visitors a view of the river, the sunset, and the amphitheater. They say his last hunting camp was approximately 2 miles north of Dublin by the Scioto River near to the Scioto Park location. He was described as peaceful, intelligent, and dignified by white settlers. Known to the Wyandot as Sha-Te-Yah-Ron-Ya, he acquired the name Leatherlips from the white settlers because he always kept his word. The work by Ralph Helmick of Boston was commissioned by the Dublin Art Council. On July 1, 1990, it was dedicated to the Scioto Park on Riverside Drive.

This was my 2nd time being to this park. We stopped by here on our way to hike at Hocking Hills. It's not a huge park, but it's very nice and has it's own flare. It's down the road from a school. There was ample parking, and it does have handicap parking if that's needed. The restrooms are great at this park. There is a lake which had ducks/geese on it. There was a field where someone had made snowmen. There was a raised sitting area overlooking a stage and the lake. There was a playground for kids. There was a covered pavilion. The main reason we went was for the unique statue of Chief Leatherlips. There is a concrete slab w/writing near Chief Leatherlips telling about the history of the statue.

Very nice park! It was a great (and quick) stop for lunch with a really fun photo op. We followed Garmin and Apple maps to find it; Roadtrippers got us close, but it wasn't quite accurate. Wasn't hard to find at all though.

The pictures really do not do it justice. It is a very cool work of art- the sculpture of Leatherlips. The signage telling the story of the piece is very interesting. It is a great photo op, but not just from the front. On the backside of the sculpture there is a very nice view of the river- a really nice vista. This is certainly worth the stop. You can just view the sculpture of take in other aspects of this clean, well maintained park.
