“founded on July 14, 1943”
The young child known as the "Plant Doctor" tended his secret garden while observing the day-to-day operations of a 19th century farm. Nature and nurture ultimately influenced George on his quest for education to becoming a renowned agricultural scientist, educator, and humanitarian.
This is one of our favorite NPS sites. We visited in 2018 on a rainy day, so we could only experience indoor exhibits. We were not disappointed! The visitor center is very well done, with great information and exhibits. There is also a lab/classroom upstairs with interactive, hands on learning opportunities. Our children really enjoyed this portion of the visit. Don’t forget the Junior Ranger program.
Since we didn’t get to explore the outside trails, old house, pond, etc, we decided to stop by on our recent trip through that area. The grounds are breathtaking. We were there mid-October and the weather was perfect. The trail is about a mile, just perfect for a good leg stretch on a long driving day.
This stop is definitely worth the short trip off the interstate. The staff is very helpful and friendly and the site is very well maintained.
Beautiful little museum. The staff is very friendly and there are a lot of interactive options for kiddos. I did not expect there to be a hike included, but the monument included the grounds where Carver grew up (just shy of a 1 mile hike around).
Absolutely amazing story behind a figure most of us know very little about. Tells his life story & facilities are extremely well- maintained. Great staff. Very educational!
Neat location! It's fascinating to see how small a home he lived in, the kinds of conditions they were. There's a cemetery on the property, neat little exhibits, and a giftshop (Don't forget to stamp your parks and recreation "passport"). It's a decent pit stop if you are on your way somewhere.
What a wonderful spot! Huge picnic area, very interesting exhibits and a lovely walking trail to various points of interest from Carver's childhood. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail.
Well worth the visit to learn more about George Washington Carver. The monument has a picnic area and beautiful trails with points of interest. Very well kept and educational.
