One of the more popular state capitols to tour, it is easy to spot it with its sparkling 23-karat gold leaf dome and four-surrounding smaller copper-topped domes. Those wishing to see the inside from a bird's eye view will climb 298 steps before reaching the top from their start on the second floor. Historic flags, some hailing from the U.S. Civil War-era, are on display, and tour staff are available during all hours in which the capitol is open to visitors. The Capitol Room, located in the Capitol building, is available to rent for events such as weddings, corporate conferences and other private gatherings[http://capitoliowa.com]. Cafeteria is on the bottom floor.
Professional tour guides give free 90 minute tours at several times a day. Well worth it if you have the time and interest. The law library is spectacular.
Wanted to just stop in and ended up spending almost an hour here. The kids loved looking in all the rooms at the architecture and artifacts. It is a beautiful building.
Lawrence was our guide and gave a fabulous tour. He kept our 5 year old riveted during the 1.5 hour tour! Totally worth the time to do it!
