“come learn about this monumental structure”
Built by South Carolina colonists in 1721, Fort King George was the southernmost fortification defending the British empire in North America. Though it only lasted six short years until 1727, the fort served a monumental role toward the later establishment of Georgia. Today, Fort King George Historic Site, operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Parks and Historic Sites division, hosts several thousand visitors a year. Our award-winning programs teach visitors about this monumental structure and how Georgia came to exist as the 13th British colony in North America.
A very interesting place but you need bug spray as we got eaten up. Fun to actually be able to go in and walk around the block house to.
You can walk through the whole fort and into each building. It was not roped off like some historical sites.
This is a lovely place to stop if you're looking for a quiet place to picnic or take in some history. We didn't pay the admission fee but still enjoyed the picnic area and gift shop. Currently it's $7.50 per person.
Fort King George is a nicely done reconstruction of the original Fort. they added a lot of everyday details to the building so you can actually imagine how the life must have been. it gives you an impression as if it was garrisoned yesterday. the park is not too big and compared to other similar parks it was nearly empty of visitors wich gives you a lot of space whilest exploring. Other than the Outdoor Museum (the actual Fort) there is a indoor exhibition and a short Movie about the Place. Admission is around USD 6.
Beautifully kept Fort. Took my 2 kids and they enjoyed the nature walk and all of the fort buildings.
We stopped here for a break on our road trip and really enjoyed the beautiful site. The museum was very well done and the staff was incredibly helpful and kind. A great place for a picnic as well.
Reconstruction per found blueprints from London archives....still pretty cool
A little off the beaten path. Easy enough. We went when it was raining so we were the only ones there. A nice walk to the fort easy on paths. The kids enjoyed having the run of the place in the buildings and overlooking the marsh was beautiful even in a rainy day. Clean and well kept.
We loved it! Alot of history, really neat place
