This is a nice little drive that takes you around to see lots of different wildlife (duh wildlife loop) but it also takes you to the area where the buffalo are. There were tons of people driving up to the herd but we just watched from a distance. I would recommend coming in the early morning or late evening when the wildlife is more active.
This was absolutely breathtaking, views of scenery and wildlife. We did not get to experience the entire herd of buffalo near us, but we did see one grazing beside the road. We also saw several Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Prairie Dog Town, Wild Donkeys, and a Turtle if all things.
The “loop” is closed for road construction. You can go 16 miles in but then turn around and retrace your path. Go on the needles hwy instead, which can be slow at times but worth the drive.
Beautiful, beautiful views! All we could do was roll the windows down and enjoy. We saw deer, pronghorns, and buffalo! Iron Mountain Road was a MUST see, too.
