A.H. Stephens State Historic Park

We have found in our travels that Georgia state parks provide some great campsites. In an area with 25 sites, we had a large campsite offering good space and some privacy. There are three lakes, walking trails, museum and a separate equestrian campground.
It is located in a very small town just a few miles off I-20, with only a Dollar General for supplies. Mama Chucha's cafe is a wonderful surprise with a nice variety of delicious food. Heavy's BBQ is only open on weekends.
There are trains that come through the town which just added to our enjoyment. It did not bother us at night.
Georgia parks offer a senior discount and rewards card to collect points toward more camping. What more can you ask?

We were looking for a place near Greensboro GA. Based on the reviews from Campendium, we decided to try this place. A true hidden gem. The sites are huge. A small area for RV camping, the sites are all located in a big circle under big pine trees. There is a cool nature trail and horse riding trails as well. Super friendly staff. Great little getaway in the middle of nowhere. If need some food close by, Mama Chucha’s is a nice choice. Good food and welcoming staff.

Spacious, level gravel sites plopped in amongst towering trees nestled into the heart of Confederate of nowhere, Georgia - where the Civil War rages on.

Ok, so the deep seeded love for the Confederacy that exists behind a very thin veil (is it even veiled?) is a bit disturbing - but once you're nestled into a campsite at this campground, you may forget about that. Kind of. If you go into 'town' and you don't have a drawl you will be called out on it.

Sites are all water and 50A/30A/15A. There is a fire ring, a grill, a picnic table and a post for hanging stuff (I don't know what to hang - I've been pondering this our entire stay). Dump station on your way out. Bathrooms are decently clean, shower pressure is awesome and the water is hot.

There are miles of trails of varying accessibility in the park depending on the time of the week (horses have first dibs on some of the trails.) Speaking of horses - this place is chock full of them on the weekend if you head down towards the (separate) horse camping area, which offers sturdy, covered stalls ($12/night) and campsites with water/electric.

There is a national treasure of a duck that resides down near the main office who is very friendly and will eat out of our hand. He is a duck house down there too - complete with a duck mailbox - but I don't think he goes in there much. There is a standing swing/track thing that adults or kids can ride on up past the park office.

This is a quiet campground - with some road noise in the distance, and a few trains tooting a few times a day. We saw coyotes playing in the early morning hours, turtles popping up and down in the various ponds and creeks, and other wild animals that I can't think of right now.

There is not much in the area surrounding the campground. You can visit the AH Stephens Museum if you are into Civil War stuff. Heavy's BBQ is an interesting - although not overly delicious or cleanly place to check out (we went - and we wouldn't go again - but we wouldn't not go for a first time). There is a Dollar General in town, and a restaurant (Mama Chucas) that is open hit-or-miss but apparently has good meals. The nearest grocery store is about 25minutes North in Washington.

We got blazing fast AT&T speeds here - 38Down/10Up. Verizon was 4.4Down/2.4Up.

Everything everyone else said in the reviews were right on. Nice park, level gravel lots, great trees, awesome camp hosts. Hike to lake easy and pretty. Was there on a Sunday and able to attend church next to the museum. Friendly people and great service. Pastor greeted at the door. Went to museum and toured AH Stephens home. Very interesting. Husband was concerned about getting our direct TV working due to some sports games. No problem even with the trees. Great way to spend the weekend

For context: We prefer lots of privacy & pretty views, with lots of hiking and typically go boondocking (national forest areas have been closed). The campground was clean, well taken care of with rangers and police making their rounds enough to feel like the park was safe. All campers were pleasant quiet and friendly. Our site was fairly level and had some privacy. There were three lakes, small and muddy (must have rained recently). The equestrian campground and the cottages looked nice. If we were to come back we would choose site 23 or 15 which offered the most privacy. While 23 is right at the entrance and the campsite was full, traffic was very light . Verizon LTE 2 bars most of the time. So nothing was inherently wrong with the park, just not for us.

Stayed one night, in and out, on our way north. Site is a pull thru double with a back in too, would be great place to gather with camping friend. Most all of the site here would be easy to get in and out here with our PU trk/ 28' TT. Great wooded surrounding & some trails to explore if you have the time. We'll come back again.

We stayed here while on our way north. The camp host was very helpful, bathrooms and showers were very new and clean. Site was large level and clean. Some nice hiking.

We and another couple stayed here for the Thanksgiving week. The only sites available at booking time were in the equestrian section. If you like seeing (and hearing) horses, this is just an added benefit. We took several hikes in the park, none were strenuous. The camp host and other campers were very friendly. Our site (22) had a wooden 'porch' like area on it for the grill, fire ring, and picnic table - very nice. One note for tall campers, do not let your GPS take you on memorial street. There is a 12' bridge there and no way to turn around. Just follow the 'brown' park signs from the road to go around it. Only internet available is close to the office - cell service was pretty poor (but I'm OK with that).

Awesome campground. Clean showers and bathrooms. Camp hosts were helpful. Hiking trails, visitors center abs lake. We stumbled on this by accident, but we’re pleasantly surprised

A quiet park not far from I-20. Sites are mostly level. Most of the sites are long enough for any rig, with enough space between to not feel crowded. The current camp hosts are very friendly and gave us a tour of their schoolie. Electric and water hookups only, but there is a double dump on the way out. There are a couple nature trails. Most of the trails, however, are for horses, and there is a separate campground for them. Plenty of geocaches. If the GPS tries to have you turn at the courthouse in Crawfordville, don't do it. There is a very low railroad bridge that you must go under. Follow the brown signs on US 278 to the west of town to go around the bridge and come back to the park entrance. All in all, it was a very relaxing weekend. We would definitely return.
