“Exquisite pine ridge scenery”
Western Nebraska's premier state park, Fort Robinson, west of Crawford, has it all -- with more than 22,000 acres of exquisite Pine Ridge scenery, compelling old west history, exceptional lodging, loads of fun-time activities, scenic camping and the park's own buffalo and longhorn herds.
Fort Robinson State Park is visually a beautiful area of high prairies with buttes jutting out of the ground, intersected by Soldier Creek and White River, all connected by rolling hills. Exploring the park seems best done on horseback in the heat of summer. I'm sure spring and fall hikes are more tolerable on the miles of exposed trails. There are plenty of full (extension hose most likely required for sewer connections) and partial hookup RV sites, however the green found in the camping area appears to be largely overgrown weeds. The Park as a whole seems a bit neglected, and for that reason I didn't give 5 stars. Even the dumpsters are ugly with broken lids. The small-lettered location direction signage is very difficult to see, especially for a first time guest trying to navigate the Park. Note: RV check in is at an office that is not located in the camping area. Plenty of activities are offered during the summer for kids and adults, including a playhouse producing live-staged shows. There is a cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at reasonable prices for the somewhat limited offerings, although here is a chance to eat buffalo. This Park has the potential to be a 5 star attraction, it needs some attention to achieve that.
