“a classic beachfront resort”
With its iconic red turrets piercing an azure California skyline, Hotel del Coronado radiates with a confidence of gracious Victorian splendor that is without equal. Built in 1888, this classic beachfront respite near San Diego, California has long been heralded as one of America’s most beautiful beach resorts. A pronouncement underscored by its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1977. The venerable Hotel del Coronado, San Diego’s landmark Pacific resort, has been experiencing paranormal activity for as long as anyone can remember – and with good reason. With 120 years of history behind her, it’s no surprise that this Victorian masterpiece has had its share of ghostly guests. Kate Morgan, The Del’s Resident Ghost Though supernatural stories abound, most have to do with Kate Morgan, a beautiful young woman who checked in in 1892 – and never checked out. Kate (who may have been jilted by her husband or lover) took her own life at the hotel, after spending five lonely and lovesick days waiting for a man who never arrived. Today, Kate’s spirit seems to have remained at The Del, where she tends to occupy her former guestroom. But her beautiful vision – and ghostly pranks – can be experienced throughout the rambling resort and grounds.
This place is a must-see, a unique estate with so much to offer! The lobby alone is breath-taking. There are many shops, places for eats and treats, and sight-seeing to partake in. There is a lot of history to take in and so many stories of what has happened there. Grab yourself a seat and some treats in front of a firepit on the Sun Deck Bar & Grill and watch the waves. Or in winter, ice skate in the back yard!
Hotel del Coronado stands there for many years, serving all of its visitors with its doors open and with its staff smiling politely.
Even though it is an old hotel it is very well maintained and kept in a very good condition. The rooms are beautiful, not very big but include everything needed for their visitors.
The views from the balconies are fantastic and you can enjoy the beauty of the sea and the gorgeous sunsets.
This was a wonderful stay and we recommend it to everyone. We will visit it again for sure.
This is one of my favorite places to go in the San Diego area. Go out to the bar behind the hotel, have a (pricey) cocktail and people watch! Then shop at the quaint stores in the hotel. The entire property is breathtaking.
A beautiful hotel and famous spa. After Thanksgiving we watched ice skaters enjoy the hotel's beachside winter rink with an ocean view and sweater weather.
For anyone not yet having experienced The Del - this extraordinary hotel/resort, I highly recommend visiting. Bring the kids and enjoy the unbelievable beauty and awesome wonder of the hotel (including Kate Morgan's ghost), the island and the overall lore of the area.
