“Father of Gynecology”
J. Marion Sims, born James Marion Sims (January 25, 1813 – November 13, 1883) was a physician and a pioneer in the field of surgery, considered by some as the father of modern gynecology. Due to his use of African-American slaves as experimental subjects against their will, Sims remains a controversial figure among historians. You can view his memorial on the grounds of the statehouse.
I was surprised to see how late this memorial was built (1929, I believe) to not have any mention of the victims of his experiments. So, in that sense, maybe it is a good roadside attraction for gauging the mood of Carolinians regarding race at that time. This is just one of the several memorials on the statehouse campus, so I recommend the entire site as a stop, too.
This guys checkered past is worth looking up before you snap a picture. Amazing they made a memorial to him.
