A great - small - State Park. We have stayed her multiple times and we will come again. Very clean, modern and the camp spots are large. No shade to speak of, so prepare accordingly. You can spy on NORAD while you are there as it is litteraly a stones throw away. 20 miles of well laid out and marked hiking/biking trails. Not in the heart of COS, but very close to everything you need to make your stay comfortable.

Absolutely fantastic park & campground! It was beautiful. Perfectly maintained sites with area for camper and tent if you like. My husband said the site was incredibly level for connections - best he’d ever seen. There were stairs behind the campsite that led to a really cool area with 3 picnic tables for a group or family get together. Then behind that were trails leading up to a great area where you can play games or let the dog run wild! In the evening the campground was very peaceful and amazingly at 5pm we heard Taps played from, I’m assuming, the Air Force establishment nearby. Definitely want to go again and stay longer!

Though it's been a few years since our visit, our family fondly remembers camping at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. As we entered the park, we enjoyed watching for the prairie dogs that inhabit the area. Then, we headed up the mountain to the RV sites. We had a huge, level site with amazing views. In fact, we enjoyed biking around the park, seeing the variety of views from each vantage point. We also had fun exploring the hiking trails that run throughout the state park. Our kids participated in a program at the visitor's center one evening. The park was very clean and seemed brand new or recently renovated. Cheyenne Mountain is a great base for a visit to the Colorado Springs area.

Wow! That one word represents my opinion of Cheyenne Mountain State Park. As the newest state park in Colorado, they definitely did things right. Full hookups. Beautiful vistas. Great train system. Excellent site spacing. Really a great park!

Named after the mountain that it sites partially up the side of (more like at the base, but offering a tremendous view of the land below), this park offers a great place to stay in the Colorado Springs area. You have great access to everything Colorado Springs has to offer, as well as it serves as a great place to explore the surrounding area of the front range.

Fort Carson is right next door, so if you pay attention you can actually hear Reveille being played in the morning and Taps at night. And the occasion "boom" of artillery, but it is far from annoying and very infrequent.

Don't forget that you are at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, which housed NORAD for years. Pretty dang cool to try to spot signs of the military installation.

Nice State Park, close to everything and anything in Colorado Springs. My star rating of 4 is based again upon the fact that no dogs on the hiking trails, argh.

Shower is nice but is pay shower, good laundry facilities also.

Really cool state park high up on the side of Cheyenne Mountain. We've been in campsites with expansive views before but never out across a metropolitan area like Colorado Springs. Sitting out at night watching the lights of the city made for quite a contrast to our usual more sparsely populated vistas, pretty cool!

Sites are well spaced and level. Verizon signal is good if not that fast, AT&T is good signal as well but slower than Verizon. Access in to Colorado Springs is easy. Laundry is available. Hearing reveille and taps is pretty entertaining as long as you don't mind loud bugles at 6:30 AM and 10:00 PM.

The major downside to this park is that dogs are not allowed anywhere other than campground roads. There is an extensive trail network but dogs aren't allowed on any of them. The ridiculous thing is that we're not talking just back country trails but also the simple short things that connect roads to campground loops, pretty excessive.

We camped here while I attended a conference, and it was the perfect location for that. The full hookups meant that getting ready for conference days was no problem, and the campground was only 15 minutes door-to-door to Cheyenne Mountain Resort. The campground is clean and very well maintained.

The campground is across the highway from Fort Carson, which means reveille wakes you up at about 6:30 every morning. It also is situated so that almost every site has expansive views of the city of Colorado Springs. Our site (#27) was the only one we saw with trees and some privacy, though we missed out on the view because of it. Just as the lights of the city make it obvious it is close by, so do the sounds of the city that reach up to the campground. This sense of not being away from it all dropped my rating down a notch, but the ease of getting around and into Colorado Springs brought it back up.

The noise of the city is compounded by some sort of machinery that runs in the camper center apparently all night long. It is never quiet at this campground.

The real drawback to the campground is that there are no dogs allowed on ANY trails...even the short connector trails. While I understand having some trails be restricted, it would be nice to have at least one trail where the dogs could get off pavement when being walked.

See my blog for more details.

We loved this state park. We had a beautiful view of Colorado Springs below, and the best part was having a view of all the July 4th fireworks going on around the city during the holiday weekend. Our site was spacious and had some privacy. There are many hiking and biking trails all through the park which were very nice. Verizon 4G coverage there was good. The only reason I knock off any stars for this and every other CO state park is because of the ridiculous $10 reservation fee and the fact that you have to pay the $7/day park entrance fee on top of the campground fee. We travel full-time and this is the only state so far that we have been to that makes you pay an entrance fee in addition to the campground fee. Since we are traveling around Colorado for a couple of months it made sense for us to buy the CO state parks annual pass for $70, but it makes staying at CO state parks a lot more expensive than other states. We are from Florida, and FL state parks do NOT make you pay the entrance fee on top of the campground fee to camp there.

Wanting to visit Colorado Springs, we counted ourselves lucky in being able to snag a reservation for a few nights here just before the Fourth of July. This must be a really in-demand park as it was booked up for most of July and August.

We stayed in the Swift Puma campground, right next to the campground host. The campsites in this area don't offer much privacy (hello, neighbors!) but do give you great views of the city and valley below.

On the plus side, the facilities in the park seemed brand new and everything was super clean. There are lots of amenities beyond the standard on-site hook-ups like a playground, play/activity room for kiddos, laundry room, and camp store & gift shop.

One big drawback was the pet restrictions. While the park does allow you to bring your pets into the park, the restrictions are similar to those of a National Park in that you can't take your dog (or cats) with you on the trails, essentially confining them to your campsite and paved roads. (Fortunately, there are a lot of paved roads, so you can at least get some good walking in.)

We enjoyed that there are plenty of mountain biking trails that, though on the shorter side, definitely still proved challenging due the rocky terrain, narrow tracks, and climbs. All of the trails are pretty scenic and you can hike or run along the mountain bike paths as well. The city of Colorado Springs is about 7 miles away so it's close enough to explore fairly easily.

PROS: The park is well maintained, clean, has nice bathrooms, and offers some great trails. The staff were friendly and the visitors center is a great resource. The views of the city are spectacular!

CONS: Listening to the bugle calls at Ft. Carson early morning, afternoon, and night is loud and irritating. There is very little to no shade in many of the camping spots, so you are exposed to higher temperatures and WIND. Also, during our three day visit, we were constantly fighting off huge wasps.

We would go back for hiking and biking, but I doubt we will camp here again.
