“Known as a fisherman's delight”
Known as a fisherman's delight, Argyle Lake State Park has a full complement of recreational opportunities. Just 7 miles from Macomb, Argyle Lake also offers picnicking, camping, hiking and boating facilities in a scenic, natural setting. With its 93-acre lake for boating and fishing, 5 miles of rugged foot trails through luxuriant virgin forests and full-service campgrounds, this heavily wooded, 1,700-acre site is the ideal place to spend a day, a weekend or longer. Rich in local history, Argyle Hollow (now occupied by the lake) once was part of the stage route between Galena and Beardstown. Several times a week the high-wheeled, cumbersome coaches with their double teams of horses rumbled through these beautiful hills and valleys. The region has been rich in coal, clay and limestone resources. Historically, individuals commonly opened and dug their own "drift mines" to supplement their income. Several limestone quarries continue to operate in the region. In 1948, the state purchased the land from local farmers and homesteaders, erected a dam to create the lake and dedicated Argyle Lake State Park to the citizens of Illinois.Today, whether your preference is viewing wildflowers and fresh foliage in the spring, picnicking, fishing and boating in the summer, appreciating the brilliant fall colors or sledding and snowmobiling in the winter, Argyle Lake State Park is a great place to visit.

Stayed here 4/6/19 to 4/10/19. I was here so early in the season that I was basically the only one in the whole campground. There was one other camper there the whole time I was there, and on the weekend a few others showed up, but otherwise it was pretty much empty.
I chose a site next to a water hydrant so that I could just hook up to it, however, once I got all set up I found out the hydrant was shut off. I ended up having to make a trip into the park to get water from another hydrant and then setting back up again. A few days later I realized someone had come and turn the water on, so I doubt this would be an issue for anyone else staying here.
When I was here the park was in good shape and my site was right next to a hiking trailhead. I hiked the loop around the lake which was great (i think it was about 6 miles). Overall I really enjoyed my stay here. The only downside was the lack of a water hookup, but I think that's how all Illinois state parks are.

I drove the class a sites then walked them to pick a spot most spots appear to be level but not all put them some might required as much as 4 in of lift on one side... the lake is why I came and it has been drained for repairs and probkey wount be back to normal level for at least a year if not 2.. I also drove and walked all the class b sites then walked walked them... most of them are level but very short... if you have tall rig you won make it around the park bc or the tree height... I would not pull anything but a pop up to the class b sites bc of how narrow the road are... the c sites are big but close together and the d sites are spread way out some have pick tables some do not... distance from the road is between 10 and 100 yard... some of the rv sites had lots or trash in them some were very clean... there are trash cans about every 10 sites they had been destroyed by coons from the looks of it

We stayed one night and were pleasantly surprised with the campground. The park appears really well maintained and the lake is beautiful. We walked the campground and also walked the road from the campground to the dam, but didn't get out on any of the trails. We will certainly put this on our list of parks where we'd like to return.

Last minute holiday weekend plans but overall we enjoyed the park. The trails were hilly and a bit hard to navigate but a good workout. Picked out site after the camp host said someone came in late and took the spot we had reserved for the weekend. We would have had more privacy but the other one worked out fine. Grassy sites but fairly level. We enjoyed our location and the shower house had decent showers with warm water. Enjoyed biking, hiking, and fishing. No canoe or boat rentals and thought we’d see more boats on the water for a holiday weekend. Internet was hit or miss. Sometimes 3G and sometimes 1-2 bars with Verizon. Don’t count on it to work.

Very pretty little park. I was in Big Oak CG on the east side of the lake. Just could use a little updating. Overall everything was clean, camp host was very friendly and helpful - just seems to perhaps be suffering from lack of funding. Had 30 amp service but kept tripping at about a 20 amp draw. Sections of trails that were grass were a bit overgrown.
Nice park for a peaceful getaway.

It was tricky trying to find our spot, figuring out where to fill up fresh water tanks was kinda odd, but the camp host was wonderful! He gave us a map which helped tremendously! Normally we are emailed one when we make reservations at most parks. Our spot was secluded, which I absolutely loved! We had a few issues with the electricity tripping our surge protector. Overall the park is beautiful, neat trails, huge pine trees! The road to our site was really windy and hilly. Going slow is a must! I have heard good things about the restaurant at the docks but we ran out of time to eat there. We will definitely stay there again.

Stayed here over Labor Day Weekend. Every year there is an Antique Engine Show and Flea Market. So, the park was packed. However, the sites have really good spacing and everyone really kept it quiet. Didn't do much fishing but the trails were well taken care of for the most part. The shower house is in the Twisted Oaks Campground near the entrance. The sites there are very close together. If you don't need extra facilities, I would recommend the Big Oaks Campground.

We arrived on Wednesday and left Friday at twisted oak campground A70. Had to fill with water before setting up. Good shade and plenty of space. $15/night Wednesday and Thursday 20/night for Friday. Senior discount. Enjoyed
