“An oasis on the plains”
Full of "hands-on" entertainment and family-friendly displays, the Prairie Museum of Art & History continues to attract rave reviews from bloggers, journalists and thousands of other guests every year! Located in Colby, Kansas, at the "Oasis on the Plains" the Prairie Museum covers 24 acres and is the site of a 1930's farmstead, sod house, one-room school and the Lone Star Church. The Cooper Barn, the largest barn in Kansas, now houses the exhibit "Prairie Grasses to Golden Grains" and features farm implements, vehicles and photographs depicting the history of agriculture during the past century. The cavernous upper level is used for social activities. The main museum building was added in 1988. It is surrounded by a berm of buffalo grass. This unique building houses over 28,000 artifacts collected from around the world by Nellie Kuska, a former Colby resident.
What a delightful place! A large museum filled with treasures - large collections of coins, stamps, jewelry, glassware, china, toys, dolls and much more! Outside you will see a sod house, 1930's farmstead, one- room school, a church built in 1915 and the largest barn in Kansas! The staff is very knowledgable and eager to share!
Definitely worth it! So cool. Piece of history.
Very well done and a pleasant surprise. The outside structures gave an interesting overview of prairie life of the early settlers, and the inside exhibits add a nice touch to the overall museum. Pleasant people and free access to all parts of the exhibit, even in Covid.
Nice educational stop on the way back west to Colorado. Good place to stop and stretch the legs and learn a bit of Kansas agricultural history.
What a great museum for kids and adults! What my family appreciated that most was how "hands-on" it was - being able to walk around the farmhouse, church, sod house, school house and barn at our own pace was priceless. There is lots of room for kids to run around! The museum was quiet, well-organized and lovely. The barn, however, was truly amazing and well worth the price of admission alone.
