“nestled along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway”
Rex Hale Campground is located along the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway about 36 miles west of Cody, in northwestern Wyoming. It is just over 16 miles east of Yellowstone National Park's east entrance. The surrounding area offers many outdoor recreational opportunities, including fishing, hiking and viewing local wildlife. The campground is named after Rex Hale, one of 15 firefighters who died in the 1937 Blackwater Fire, which burned more than 1,700 acres of Forest Service lands within the Shoshone National Forest. The campground is situated near the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River and offers views of spectacular red cliffs, where bighorn sheep may be seen early in the season. A wide variety of wildlife lives in the surrounding area. Visitors often glimpse grizzly bears, deer, elk, bison, moose, fox, coyotes and bald eagles.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on September 10, 2023The first row sites 1-? on the outside loop backed up to the hwy have hookups for water and electricity. We were on the outside loop backed up to the river and we did not have hookups. Our site needed leveling but it was a spacious site on gravel that fit our 27' airstream and our 22' truck parked at an angle. We had a picnic table, fire pit and bear box. There was also a trail leading down to the river behind our site. Each site felt spacious and offered privacy with all the vegetation. As long as there was wind, we didn't have a problem with mosquitos.
If you walked past the amphitheater there is a trail that leads down to the river. Here there is a sandbar of gravel for kids to easily play near the water. The water is cold and swift, not great for swimming.
No dump station or showers. The toilets are vault and very clean.
We enjoyed our time here. The camp host Gene is very nice and made you feel right at home. It was almost a half hour to Cody and about the same to the east Yellowstone entrance.
We did not have any cell service here.

We had electric and water, which was very helpful in the heat of the day. We didn't realize we would have water, and that was a nice surprise. This campground is only about 20 miles from Yellowstone in one direction and Cody in the other. No dump station...we used the one at Buffalo Bill State Park, which cost us $6. The campground is close to the highway, and we could hear the traffic but not see it. No cell service. The view was astounding!

We stayed at Rex Hale in early July 2020 as our home base for Yellowstone. It is a bit of a haul to the park everyday, but we preferred the open and spacious sites here rather than being packed in tight in a YNP campground.
We had reserved site 22 right along the Shoshone River. It was gorgeous, with a little path that led to the river access for fishing. After 2 nights we decided to move to site 11 to have electric and water hookups. We really enjoyed our time at both sites, as each one had great things to offer.
The camp host was friendly and very helpful in getting us moved to the elec/water site.
A few days it was extremely windy during mid day. Other than that, it’s an extremely nice and quiet campground. For an added bonus, stay up and check out the night skies and the Milky Way!
We would absolutely camp here again!

After exploring Yellowstone for a few days our travels led us eastward and out of the park. We decided to stop at Rex Hale for the night and are so glad we did. It’s a beautiful campground with a rugged mountain backdrop and high dessert feel. We didn’t have reservations but easily found a dry camp FF spot. They do have some electric hookup sites but those seemed to be reservation only.
The wind was fairly strong blowing which kept us inside for the most part. We did all cooking inside as well since the wind made any kind of outdoor cooking pretty difficult. The winds did die down later in the evening which made it possible for a small bonfire.
If you’re heading to the eastern side of Yellowstone this is a great base camp! However, a bit far if western Yellowstone is your main point of interest.
Overall gorgeous campground and we’ll surly be back if we’re in the area.

We stayed here a handful of nights in late August/ early September in different spots - those with electric and some dry. It was very quiet and dark.
It was a great alternative to staying in the park so that we weren’t stacked up amongst a ton of people. With that said, It is quite a haul to drive into park each day from here. We saw bison as we entered the park each day so I wouldn’t complain.
Husband was able to do some fishing in the morning before we headed to the park and landed some cutbow.

While there is no cell reception at all, it’s views make up for it. It’s halfway between Yellowstone and Cody, WY so the location is great. We’ll definitely stay here again.

Beautiful spot, just off the river surrounded by mountains. One of the best star gazing I’ve seen. Centered between Yellowstone and Cody, about 35 minutes from each. But zero service until you get closer to town and really no amenities around other than a small store when you get closer to Yellowstone but we did not check it out. Very clean, nice size spots. The partial hook ups spots were all taken/reserved b it says first come first serve; they are positioned closer together and to the road but still had nice privacy. Good for tents and all size rigs. We tried many other camp spots around and this was by far the best for larger rigs. Water, bathrooms and trash on site. Other camp sites did not have water and with the distance to town it was important to us. The main reason for the 4 stars is the wind that kicks up out of nowhere and the bugs in the evening. Keep your doors/windows closed and especially your blinds closed if you have a light on.
