“A route 66 institution, est. 1968”

The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum is operated by The Oklahoma Historical Society, a state agency. The museum was originally opened to the public in 1968 as the Museum of the Western Trails, operated by the Oklahoma Industrial Trust and Recreation Department (which later became the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation). In 1991 the museum was transferred to OHS. In 1993 plans began for a redevelopment of the museum in order to focus on transportation and Route 66. The project was funded with federal, state and private funds, with the citizens of Clinton (population approximately 10,000) raising over $200,000.00.
A step back in time to look at the history of Route 66 and how it changed America. Great walk-through museum for all ages. Museum does have a fee,$5 adult and less for students and seniors. Gift shop has unique souvenirs and shirts that are reasonably priced. This is a definite stop for Route 66 enthusiasts!
Best walk through time. Love every moment of the experience. Nicest staff.
Not historically accurate as they only tell a sanitized version of history. They have a huge picture on the wall “white waiting area” and nothing mentioning the segregation impact on minorities traveling on Route 66 or the Green Book travel guide.
This is a fun walk-thru museum if you want to know anything about Route 66 (The Mother Road) and what it was like to travel it. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to go through and see everything. In addition, 2 miles down the road is a Route 66 Cafe which is a great lunch spot (although not listed on Roadtrippers). Friendly people and home cooked food. It is also like a trip back in time to combine the two together. So much fun!
Awesome museum representing the time period. They have plenty of artifacts. Very clean! Get some gas in town - there isnt another station for awhile. Learn more about our trip here: https://www.facebook.com/escapervist/posts/175431017757170
One of the best museums on Route 66. Well informed staff and well executed exhibits. Extremely informative and if you can only stop at one Route 66 museum, this is the one.

This is a must-see! Very close to Rt 40 exit and a wonderful collection.
Made a quick stop as it was part of our Route 66 Passport stops with the kids (3 & 6 yr. old). We didn't go into the museum itself but there were some pretty cool photo ops outside in the lobby and a quaint little gift shop. More photo ops outside.
Well done! This museum was a great find and right off of 40! Well laid out and an excellent audio-visual presentation. Loved the artifacts and interesting facts along the way.
Clean, thoughtful, friendly and well-stocked gift shop (not after we got done in there though).
