“Seafood, wine, excellent service”
Welcome to The Anchor. We are located on the corner of 14th and Race, across from Washington Park in Over The Rhine, Cincinnati. Our approach is simple. We believe in the neighborhood. We believe that uncomplicated is better. We believe in sourcing the best product we can find. Most importantly we want to share our passion for seafood, wine and service with you.
The food was so "meh" I was surprised. I'd heard quite a few friends rave about it so I expected a bit more than we got. I did however love the outdoor seating, with the nice view of Washington Park, which is great in the summertime.
I enjoyed this place; however, I wouldn't try their fish selection for the obvious reason that we are so far from the coast (about 9 hours, I think). That said, I enjoyed the oysters (yes, I am aware of the irony). They also make a pretty mean old fashioned. I think the pear bitters are a great touch.
I really wanted to like this place, cause I love seafood. Starting with the good: I loved the scallop appetizer. It was perfect. I ordered the Fish and Chips for my main, and I loved the french fries. The fish though had a very strange taste to it, I can't really put my finger on it, but it tasted a little off. The waitstaff was also a bit off the night we went. Getting seafood in Ohio is not the easiest thing, so kudos for trying, I'm hoping that the service and fish will improve.
Oysters in Ohio? I was skeptical at first, but after going to their Dollar Oyster Night (Thursdays) I was actually pretty impressed with their New England-style clam chowder and crayfish beignets (after returning from a trip to New Orleans, no less). The dollar oysters from Delaware were fine, but I'm not sure I would ever go for full-priced oysters. The service was terrible, but what else is new?
I think the only true seafood restaurant in OTR (but I could be missing one or two), this place stands out as a unique dinner option in the area, but the pricing seems out of whack for the food (much more expensive than seems the norm in OTR). That said, the food is good and atmosphere is cool with outdoor seating and great views of Washington Park across the street
The only reason you should go here is for dollar oyster night and martinis. There are a couple of tasty things on the menu, including the french fries and the clam chowder. I got really excited when I saw "whole grilled fish" on the menu but big mistake, even though they filleted it for us, the whole thing was still full of bones as well as majorly overcooked. I think they have a lot of potential but agree with other comments - their understanding of seafood has a lot of room for improvement.
