Mary Baskett Gallery

Mary Welsh Baskett, former Curator of Prints at the Cincinnati Art Museum, is a specialist in both Western and Japanese prints, and has written extensively on the graphic arts. Her publications include: The Art of June Wayne (1969), Hand-made Papers by Eishiro Abe, Living National Treasure of Japan (1976), Footprints of the Buddha: Japanese Buddhist Prints from American and Japanese Collections(1980), and John Henry Twachtman, American Impressionist Painter as Printmaker, A Catalogue Raisonné of His Prints (1999).  Her work for the Harold and Caroline Porter Collection of Twentieth Century Prints at the Cincinnati Art Museum built one of the finest collections of twentieth century Japanese prints in the world.  In addition to her work for the museum, she has been adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati since 1969 and has owned the Mary Baskett Gallery for over three decades.  In the summer of 2007, Mary's fashion collection of major Japanese designers, Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons, and Yohji Yamamoto, was shown at the Cincinnati Art Museum. October 2009 through April 2010 the collection went on exhibition at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC. In late 2014 an exhibition began at the Crow Collection in Dallas, Texas. These events brought her commitment to Japanese fashion to light and she was honored with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Tokyo Commendation Award 2010 for her "contributions to cultural exchange in the field of art."
