“offering beauty, majesty and history”
With the beauty, majesty and history Canyon De Chelly (pronounced de-shay) has to offer, it’s easy to make it more than a day trip and spend time discovering its grandeur. Lodging—The historic Sacred Canyon Lodge is the ONLY hotel in Canyon De Chelly. Navajo owned and operated, the charm and comfort of the 70-room lodge, and the friendly Navajo staff, add to your visit to Navajo country. To enjoy the true canyon experience, you are invited to “stay in Canyon De Chelly.” For reservations, rates and more information call 1-800-679-2473. Restaurant—Adjacent to the lodge is the restaurant, located in the original trading post built in 1896. In this historic setting, visitors can enjoy regional specialties made popular by The View Hotel in Monument Valley (same Navajo family ownership). Their Navajo taco and green chile stew were featured in Delta Sky and recommended by Esquire Magazine in their “25 Best Bites to Eat in the U.S.A.” Combining professional training and ancestral heritage, the restaurant’s Navajo chefs also prepare red chile pork posole, sheep camp mutton stew, served with blue corn flour tortillas or blue corn Navajo fry bread. The restaurant offers an all-American cafeteria- style menu and is open 7-days-a-week. Trading Post—Also on the grounds is the gift shop, a trading post which has traded with local Navajos from Chinle for many years—a place that still sells woolen yarn to Navajo weavers. The shop sells fine Native American jewelry, pottery, rugs and other handmade crafts and gifts. Out of respect for the Navajo vendors who sell their goods along the scenic drive above the canyon, the shop does not sell beadwork and crafts similar to theirs. With six generations of trading history, the Canyon De Chelly Trading Post stands behind purchases with their “Certificate of Authenticity.”
This is an older clean motel located in a quiet secluded area in Chinle. I liked it.
