“Preserving the Hopewell Culture”
This National Historical Park preserves the remains of the earthworks of the Hopewell culture that lived in this area 2000 years ago. Take a self guided tour of the mounds, view some of the finely crafted artifacts in the museum and view the video, "Legacy of the Mound Builders" which helps to explain this historic culture. And don't forget to stop by the visitor center gift shop!
Stopped here on a road trip because it seemed like an interesting place to get out and stretch our legs. I recommend checking out the free video in the gift shop before wandering around just to get a better idea of what you are looking at as you walk around this unique area. Certainly an interesting and educational park to visit.
We happened to notice the sign as we were bypassing Chillicothe on our southern Ohio camping trip. Sure glad we stopped. The National Park site does an excellent job of telling the story of this amazing civilization of early North American Indians. The Visitor Center offers a free video introduction to the history of these people and the rangers were ready to add to the story. We enjoyed watching families spending time learning about Ohio history. The actual mounds are next to the center and are a short easy walk to see. Fascinating history.
