What a wonderful, diverse collection of art. They have a brochure of 10-15 "must-sees" if you don't have much time, but you could spend a day here just wandering.
A little bit of Chicago bias is coming out, but I think that the Art Institute is the best art museum in the United States. It's got an incredible collection of artwork spanning from ancient times to a beautiful Modern Wing that's full of the greatest art from the 1950s on. It's also free on Thursday afternoons, which is awesome for art lovers on a budget.
Pro tip: do some prep before you go so you know exactly what you want to see and where it is, because this place is huge. They do a pretty good job of directing you to the really famous pieces, but it was still a little confusing and very overwhelming. Overall, it's a must see, and since you can easily spend several hours there, it's a pretty good value for the price of admission.
It's not uncommon to hear people say that the Art Institute of Chicago is their favorite art museum in the country, and when you visit, it's easy to see why. For one, the place is freakin' massive. Seriously, don't go unless you have several hours to spend.
The permanent collection is great, but they also have a fantastic rotation of special events, lectures, and exhibits.
Great museum with wonderful exhibits coming all the time. The museum is pretty big so unless you wan't to spend a good chunk of time there, I'd recommend looking up what's there and going to see one or two exhibits. There's also a gorgeous little plaza-type garden to the right (if you're facing the museum) that's one of the nicest spots in downtown Chicago to go read a book or have a picnic when the weather is nice.
This is my all time favorite art museum. I love wandering the vast halls and continually seeing paintings i've only see pictures of in books. I fell in love with the art of Gerhard Richter at this museum and I will never forget it.
The header image here is incorrect. The header image is of the Art Institute of Chicago, not Spertus.
Tickets aren't cheap, like $25, but you seriously get so much bang for your buck. I loved seeing the famous stuff, American Gothic, Nighthawks, the Van Goghs, the Warhols, all that... but they also have an effing badass collection of swords and guns and armor.
