“a very large statue of a ver large head”
Most seem to find this unique gallery by spotting a large white head on the hillside overlooking the Taconic Parkway. I came upon it one day with my friend, Paul, while driving about the charismatic Berkshire Spur. Fueled with Starbucks (I know, I know…small batch espresso had not yet come to Columbia County when I lived there) we followed the blue ‘Taconic Sculpture’ signs from the main road to a smaller road to an even smaller road and then thru a deciduous grove to the steep driveway which opened up to a small plateau.
This post is misleading, there's is a giant head photo op from the Taconic Parkway - but that's a highway and not a great spot to stop. The head that you can see is part of a Sculpture Garden in Chatham NY (Google Taconic Sculpture Garden or drive in to town and look for the hand painted signs) it's at the end of a remote dead end... but don't get scared off! It's just when you thought you've gone too far. We pulled up and a friendly man greeted us & asked where we drove in from - then left us undisturbed to walk his amazing grounds. The giant white head all the way at the edge of the property has a small door and then a ladder that you can climb and check out the views. We brought our dog and that didn't seem to be a problem. It's really amazing. You should totally go.
There are some beautiful sculptures in the park. They are also for sale if you fancy any. The sculpture park is actually the artist's property and most of them are quite lovely. Even his house is a work of art (though you cannot go in there) It was the first stop on quite an extensive road trip and it was a wonderful way to kick it off.
You don't want to stop on the Taconic to see the head. The head is located at Taconic sculpture garden. You need to get of the Taconic to get to the sculpture garden where there are about 30 or so sculptures including the above pictured head as well as the one you can see from the Taconic. With the side trip.
Okay- the head in the picture seems to be an entirely different head than the one on the parkway. There is indeed a Giant head. Unfortunately, there is no place to park or stop and admire the head. Don't go out of your way to view the head, but if you're driving by, have the camera ready and watch for it.
Nice place, friendly artist. It's actually his house.

Stopped here on the way to Niagara Falls! It's at the top of a long dead end dirt hill (kind of scary) and you can park right on the grass. The sculptor welcomed us and was so nice. You're able to go inside of the gigantic woman head, walk up the stairs in her head, and look out. It's amazing!
