“A Great Diversity in Caledonia!”

Nestled in the blufflands of southeastern Minnesota,Beaver Creek Valley State Park is known for its clear streams fed by the "Big Spring." Its streams are home to brown and native brook trout. In spring, wildflowers that blanket the woodland hills and valleys attract migratory songbirds like the rare Acadian flycatcher, Cerulean warbler, and Louisiana waterthrush. These birds nest in the park. A hiking trail meanders along the stream and up into a maple-basswood and oak forest. Campers are lulled to sleep by the murmuring stream. The best way to learn more about Beaver Creek Valley State Park is to stop at the park office for a map and information about the park. Although the park does not have a naturalist on staff, activities are offered occasionally. Beaver Creek Valley State Park is in the Blufflands Landscape Region. It is a nature lover's paradise because of the diversity of natural communities. Bottomland hardwoods such as black ash, willow, box elder, cottonwood, and elm grow in the valley while a mix of maple, walnut, basswood and oak thrive above the valley. Small patches of native prairie and oak savanna occupy some of the south and west-facing slopes in the park.

This state park, in Minnesota Bluff Country, occupies the upper reaches of Beaver Creek, including its primary source Big Spring. The water flows in good volume at about 50 degrees F. A little cold for swimming but some do; just right for trout. Many campers are also trout fishermen.

The campground is along a gravel access road that runs the length of the campground. Most sites are rather small, the electrical sites are about 30 feet wide and are parallel to each other. The first 23 have electricity ($8). The higher sites are tents only, and cart ins.

The campgrounds have water in one building, including showers for campers. But all toilets are vault type.

Hiking is very good. Some trails are rather steep. If you want a more leisurely walk, try the trails that go downstream from the picnic grounds - go over the swinging bridge.

No cell service.

Beautiful place. There's an enchanting little dam you have to drive over in order to get to the sites. We got to ours just before a rain storm and set up, got cozy, and had a great first night on a cross-country trip with our kids. Only $27.50 (plus an additional $5 car pass) - there was electric (maybe water but we didn't use it so didn't look) and the setting can't be beat.

Was a pretty basic SP. unique that we had to ford a stream with our vehicle to get into our park. We loved the camper cabin!
