“The world's largest tree!”
The Giant Sequoia National Monument was designated by President William Jefferson Clinton in April 2000. The Monument now encompasses 353,000 acres. The Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron Giganteum) is the world's largest tree. It occurs naturally only in a narrow 60-mile band of mixed conifer forest generally between 5,000-8,000 ft. elevation on the west slope of the Sierra Nevada. There are 65-75 groves of sequoias in the Sierra, depending upon how the groves are defined.
Address given sends you down a 22 mile dead end road with no giant trees.
My favorite place in the entire world. The oldest stump that we are able to date correctly says the Chicago stump tree was 3200 years old, think about it, that tree wasn't only around during Jesus time but was big and talk then! They are resistant to bugs and fire and they hardly ever rot, they remain just like they were the day they fell for centuries! The park is incredible and you should definitely camp and stay awhile. Beautiful animals in this park as well.. Birds, deer, and bear ..oh my!!
How could we resist camping at the Hume Lake Campgrounds? The facilities are so clean and well cared that camping lovers cannot stay away for a second.
One of the greatest things you can see at the area is the Giant Sequoia National Monument. And it is really GIANT! It is magnificent to know the age of this tree and how it stands healthy and growing after so many years and weather changes.
The tree is empty from beneath and looks like it is held and growing by its roots and only. Such an interesting landmark!! My kids played hide and seek at the roots of it. Entering below the tree gives you the impresson of exploring a cave!
No doubt we are coming back next year to camp!! Everything is so interesting and clean! There are small food shops and amenities on site.
