“See the Samurai Sword of the Pilot Who Bombed Oregon”
The Chetco Community Public Library has had its roots in the community since 1927. It was funded by donations and membership dues until 1955 when it was turned over to the City of Brookings for operation. From 1955 to 1982 the library operated on a combination of city, county and federal funds. Following the removal of the county's financial support in the early 1980s, the City closed the library temporarily and later reopened it with reduced hours and staff. Concerned citizens of the Brookings-Harbor area organized to explore the possibility of forming a library district, in hopes of assuring funding for the library. In 1983, voters approved the formation of the Chetco Community Public Library District and elected a five member Board of Directors. The service area of the district begins at the Oregon/California border and extends in a northerly direction up to but excluding Pistol River and in a northeasterly direction up to and including the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Any private property in the district is taxed to support the library. The present estimate for the population of the district is 13,085. Don't miss the Samurai Sword on display!
The town of Brookings, Oregon has a very interesting artifact in their possession. A "priceless" 400-year old samurai sword. It's not just any priceless, 400-year old samurai sword. But the sword of Japanese fighter pilot, Warrant Flying Officer Nobuo Fujita, who was responsible for dropping four incendiary bombs on Oregon in 1942.
