“Grand Canyon of the South”
4600 acres. A 5-mile gorge, plunging to 1650 feet, in this “Grand Canyon of the South.” Bountiful nature, as richly colored as our mosses underfoot, our mountains on the horizon, and our sky overhead. Rivers to raft, heights to scale, camping, birding and porches to be sat on…while smiles form lazily upon contented faces. Expect this and more at Breaks Interstate Park, up in the mountains of Virginia and Kentucky, where uncommon history, heritage and heart offer a welcome that never wears out.

The Breaks Interstate Park is located in both KY and VA in the rugged Appalachian Mts. Stunning views abound in this somewhat remote campground. There are 4 different loops. We stayed in Loop C because they all have full hookup. I do not recommend Loop D because all of the hookups will be on the wrong side of most rigs. Sites vary considerably on size so make sure you check the size of the site before booking. Most are spaced well apart and are mostly shaded. Some are pull thru and some are back in. This campground was very quiet while we were there in late September. Surprisingly it was only about half full. It gets very dark here at night, so its great if you are like us and like that.
There is a large pool, but it was already closed for the season. They have a small lake that you can fish in (VA or KY fishing licence required) and they have paddle boats that you can rent. We tried to ride our bikes but the terrain is very hilly and we about died trying to go up some of the hills. Some drivers also drive a little too fast on the roads in the park so beware if you try to bike or are walking. On our ride we saw several very friendly deer.
Make sure to check out the many overlooks in the park. They offer amazing views.
The staff here was very friendly and helpful. The only negative to this campground may be the drive to get here. Regardless if you are coming from VA or KY the road getting to the park is two lanes of windy and twisting turns for quite a while. Its doable, but just take your time and check out your route on google streetview first. We camped with some family coming from TN and they ended up being sent on an almost one lane road.
We will definitely be coming back here again!

Our second time staying in the Breaks Interstate Park and we’ve had a blast both times. Most campsites are tucked against the woods and offer plenty of shade. Both spots we stayed in (one in A, one in C) required us to use all our leveling blocks. Some sites are more level than others.
We hiked several trails in the park and they are very easy and beautiful. We loved the trail to the creek and overlook right beside campground B and the trail that leads around the lake to the amphitheater. Easy enough that anyone could make it.

Did a short trip and stayed one night on A loop. It was quiet, though a bit hot in the afternoon. Decent camp store for necessities but not much else. We didn't have time to enjoy the hiking trails but maybe next time.

Great family campground. Site 38 is next to the washroom which has some kind of pump that sounded like a pressure washer and would start up any time day or night.
The site was also at the beginning of the loop and there were a ton of cars driving by just looking at the campsites. It seemed strange.

This park is a hidden gem. Hiking trails have the best cliff views. We stayed in A61 and ATT has no cell signal. Loop B and C had the best ATT signal but loop B has a lot of children because of the playground. We loved our spot but would camp in loop C next time. Lots of dogs and very friendly staff. If staying in loop A, stay away from 35-42 and 48-65 because the pump from the bathhouse sounds like a constant generator. The road coming in to the park is extremely winding for about 30 minutes, would be difficult with a long trailer. It was doable for our truck camper.

This is a beautiful place to stay in a beautiful part of the country. Be sure to get to the State Line Overlook! We planned on staying 3 nights, but hurricane Delta came through, washing out the weekend, so we travelled on. Clean bathrooms and generally very quiet, even on a busy weekend. Good price for a large bundle of wood.

I picked this park based on its online pictures. It’s lovely! The park is a two mile loop, basically, so super easy to make your way around it. Though you can find strenuous hikes, most of the prime viewing spots are a short distance from the parking spots. Had pull-offs, a lodge with gift shop, too. There’s a little camp store with wood, and just about every last minute oh-I- forgot-that-item you could need. Will be back for sure. Really nice bathroom/shower house. All tile, heated, clean and cared for. Easy check in-out. I loved A 57, though my rig is very small. Some spots are close together but the higher numbers of A loop and C and D loops have ample space between spots. There are 4 loops and most on C and D have decent cell service even on Sprint. There are loops with playgrounds (and those littles wake up early and play!) but also plenty without if you are kid-free. ;) 15 minutes from a town. Free wifi at the lodge. It is GORGEOUS and I say this though it rained both days. I just suited up and had almost every spot to myself!

The park is fairly large with four sections. The campground is pretty easy to get in and out of and the main roads are well paved and wide enough for two RV’s to pass. It has an on-site restaurant, pool (closed while we were there), and a very small camp store. Cell coverage varies depending on where you are in the campground. The park is located on the VA and KY border and has some really amazing views at different overlooks. If you are into hiking this place is great, but not much else to do in the area. The sites are gravel and vary in how level it site is. We were in “D” section, which only has 30AMP plus water and some sites have sewer. Our site was tight with trees, and the water /electric was on one side and the sewer on the other side of the RV.
