“All-Metal Fantasy Safari”
Spanning hundreds of acres in both directions off Borrego Springs Road, Galleta Meadows Estate, which is owned by Dennis Avery of Avery Labels, is a mini Marfa, Texas, and a city folk's safari rolled into one. There's no fear of getting attacked or eaten, only wonderment at sculptor Ricardo Breceda's life-like creations — some modern-day species, some prehistoric. The pièce de résistance of Brecada's painstaking artistry is the 350-foot dragon that spans both sides of the road. Roaring dinosaurs, massive serpents, ferocious saber tooth tigers, birds of prey and other beasts dot the desert landscape. Artist/welder Ricardo Breceda created the sculptures. The late Dennis Avery (heir to the Avery label fortune) commissioned the works for his Galleta Meadows Estate. Now the Borrego Springs sculptures are spread out all across the town. Commonly called the Sky Art Sculptures, there’s a story behind these beasts.
This was fun. You have to get off the road to really see them and there are numerous pathways. Some were pretty bumpy but not too bad. There are a lot of them and we were still enjoying them by the time we got to what we think was the end of them.
Loved these amazing desert sculptures! Great photo opportunities at sunrise and sunset. Get a sculpture map from the Anza Borrego visitors center to find out just where everything is.
Beautiful, but don’t drive off the road, the sand is notoriously easy to get trapped in!
