“Relax with some Borax”
Buried deep in the Mojave Desert is one of the biggest and richest deposits of borax on the planet. You will also find the Borax Visitor Center, one of the best kept secrets of the Southern California desert.
One of the coolest places we stop on our trip. Well worth the 30 minutes to check it out. Pay attention to the speed limit signs going in!
Closed due to Covid. You cannot get close enough to the tire or mule team due to locked gate.
Really cool stop. Was interesting and the kids really enjoyed the brow of the mine! Worth the 30 minutes.
Well...the road to the visiting center is quite confusing!
The road is shared with the factory on Boron Rd, and the signs are quite hard to follow. Up the road you will see that the speed limit drops to "37 1/2 mph".
When you reach the small office to your left, the sign will take you up a hill, which then you will want to drop your speed to "23 mph".
Once you reach the visiting center, there is the 'twenty-mule team' horse/mule carriage. Then the '190 ton-mining truck tire'. It's a cool photo-op.
If it's the right time of day, the tire makes a really cool shadow silhouette!
Inside the visiting center is a museum, FREE Admission & open 9am-5pm.
The vc overlooks the mine. Which is pretty impressive.
So all in all...it was cool to see the mine and the tire..other than that..not all that great. So if your looking for more of a short drive and a place to stretch, that's the place for you.
Cool road trip stop, some good photo ops, interesting 10 minute video if you ask and a great view at the end :)
Great fun for kids and adults who love geology and chemistry. Enjoyed a overlook into the active mine and took a few pictures in their 18ft tire. An easy 30 -45 minute stay of informational fun.
Interesting to see once if you have the time. Very nice guide and they give kids an activity book and rock samples. 10 minutes off the freeway and only takes about 20 minutes to see everything
