“The highest point in southern Wisconsin”
Perched atop the highest point in southern Wisconsin, Blue Mound State Park offers spectacular views and unique Locationgeological features. A swimming pool is available in during summer. Over 20 miles of scenic hiking, off-road biking, and cross-country ski trails, as well as a family campground, access to the Military Ridge State Trail with bike-in campsites, and a rustic cabin for people with disabilities make Blue Mound a popular destination year-round. Blue Mound State Park is just north of the Village of Blue Mounds, about 25 miles west of Madison via US Highway 18/151. From Highway 18/151, go north on County Highway F and turn left on County Highway ID into Blue Mounds. Go west on Highway ID about a half mile to Mounds Road. Turn right (north) and follow Mounds Road north through town. (Mounds Road becomes Mounds Park Road once you leave the village.) The park entrance is one mile north of the intersection of Highway ID and Mounds Road. Geographic coordinates are 43° 1' 28" N, 89° 50' 28" W.

Unfortunately is was a torrential downpour for most of our stay. The pool and splash pad looked nice, but because of the rain we didn’t get to use it. Hiking and biking paths looked pretty nice.
Our sit was surrounded by trees and brush, so it was pretty to look at while we sat protected under our awning. Site was fairly sloped and took a good amount of our Lynx Levelers to level our TT.
The electric also did not work properly. Had low amp draw and wouldn’t let us use our AC with anything else.

This is a tough park to rate because it's not a "complete" state park. It doesn't have a lake, and it doesn't have a concession (which would have been closed for COVID anyway). But the things it does have are very strong, which includes:
- Great campsites. Almost all are shaded. But be careful, many sites are not suitable for large rigs. Our site (site 11) was maybe the best site on the property. Totally shaded, very secluded and it was in a loop recently upgraded to 50 amp service.
- Trails. Blue Mound is along the Military Ridge and what they call the edge of the driftless. Some of the highest points in Wisconsin are here and the views from the scenic outlooks are super. (Observation towers were closed due to COVID.) Trails range from easy to difficult and there's something for every skill level.
- Swimming pool. They have a swimming pool, but it's closed for now.
- If you're a runner or a bicyclist in training, this is the best terrain in the state for what you do. Flat sections along with plenty of hills of varying grades.
- The picnic area is huge with plenty of spots for groups large and small.
- Location is near some nice attractions, such as Cave of the Mounds, and not far from Spring Green, location of the Frank Lloyd Wright home "Taliesen". Look for those when the pandemic is over.
We were self contained and didn't use the shower building, but it looked in good shape, and they've rebuilt at least two pit toilets in the campground fairly recently.
We've been here several times over the years and we'll be back again in the future.

We paid $42 to reserve the site online and then had to pay $11 when we got there for an 'admission sticker.' Pool only open on weekends. Free music on Saturday nights only. Great! What about Monday? Sites were far from level and only had electic hookups, no water or sewer. Not worth the money, for sure.

The park is about 25 miles southwest of Madison. It's in the Wisconsin driftless area - lots of rolling hills and the highest point in southern Wisconsin. Like all Wisconsin state parks, you pay more to camp if you're a non-resident. You also pay more for the "daily" entry fee (it was $11 per day for a non-resident)
We camped here in mid May before the swimming pool was open. The park is adjacent to Military Ridge State Trail. The trail is a old railroad with a crushed limestone surface. There is a state fee if you bike on the trail. The trail goes by farms, small towns and housing developments.
There are 2 towers to climb to get views of the region.
The campsites were well separated and quiet. Some were big and deep and others were smaller. Electric sites were scattered around the campground.
It's a 25 minute drive to the Frank Lloyd Wright House
