RESTORATION EFFORTS ONGOING as of Jan 2019 We are still undergoing restoration efforts after Hurricane Irma, so portions of the park are not open to the public Check website for update The island is virtually uninhabited, being home to the Bahia Honda State Park. Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys. Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination. Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available. The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals. Bahia Honda (meaning deep bay, in Spanish, locally pronounced: BAY-ah HON-da [ˈbeɪə], also pronounced : Bah-EE-ah OWN-dah [ba'ia]) is an island in the lower Florida Keys. U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses the key at approximately mile markers 36-38.5, between Ohio Key and Spanish Harbor Key west of Marathon, close to the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge.

The tent campsites are located in a nice part of the park, although the beach isn't great (very rocky). The campsites are small-ish, but there are good showers, and it's a short drive to the concession store and the swimming beach. It's about a 45-minute drive to Key West where you will find good dining, snorkel trips and the famous sunset.

This is an amazing state park. 3 white sand beaches. Concessions, snorkeling right from the beach. Fishing from the coastline. Isolated and natural. This place books fast. Get your reservations as early as you can! This is all the further I will go down into the Keys from now on. Blue waters, natural beaches, no waves as the flats are 3 miles wide.

Bahia Honda easily has the best beach in the Keys. Natural sand (those beaches in Key West all have trucked in sand), shallow warm water, and gorgeous views in every direction make this the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon. For this reason alone, it's worth a night or two at the campground. Beyond the beach, the campground is typical of a Florida state park with plenty of trees for privacy, well cared for facilities, and an accommodating staff.. We had to split our stay between two sites. The first, site 14, was on the water facing the old railroad bridge. We loved watching the sun set from our site every night. Our second site, #30, was an interior site near the restrooms and dump station. Not the best site with lots of light from the bathroom shinning on us all night, but it was a good size and we had trees on three sides. No matter what site you get, just being in the park with easy access to the beach is a pleasure. Be sure to reserve early though - these sites fill up fast!

We were on our way to Key West in November and happened to snag a cancelled reservation at Bahia Honda. Unless you plan your vacations 11 months ahead of time, getting a cancelled reservation is likely the only way you'll get a spot here during the busy winter months but it's worth a little site stalking!

We were in site 8 which was right across from the waterfront campsites so we had a view but no direct water access. Our site was a 30' site and we did have to squeeze in with our 30' trailer so probably no little white lies on size here when making reservations. While we were here, the no-seeum's were pretty bad and kept us inside our RV at night although we did visit friends at the park later in the season (early Feb) and I didn't notice any then in the evening.

Although the park was filled to capacity, it is quiet and the sites feel private with plenty of neighbor blocking vegetation. There is water and electric at all the RV sites. There is a separate tent area in another area of the park which is right on the beautiful, clear water.

There are a couple different beach areas and the beauty of each really depends on the winds. Generally if one is windy, the other is not. Both are within waking distance from the campground area. There are also kayak rentals, a gift shop and snorkeling trips that leave from the park.

Don't miss the sunsets!

This is absolutely a beautiful spot. Road noise, Internet quality, and noseeums keep me from giving it a 5. We stayed Dec 7-12, 2016. Price reflects all taxes

Husband and I were so excited to catch a reservation in this park because we had heard it was primo! We were very disappointed. Bath houses were in need of updates as were most other facilities at camp.

Earl, my canine companion, and I arrived here on November 11 for a 5 night stay on a waterfront site. I had made this reservation exactly one year prior.

Check-in was hassle free. Some areas of this State Park are still closed due to Hurricane Irma and the Park Rangers provided information about this on arrival.

Our spot -- site 23 -- was located on the water along the northwest shore. Like all of the waterfront RV sites, it was located between the Overseas Highway Bridge (A1A) and the Old Bahia Honda (Railroad) Bridge. Road noise can be heard from the A1A Bridge but I quickly became comfortable with the rhythmic sound of vehicle tires passing over expansion joints and the eerie look of headlights through the bridge rails at night.

Sites are fine gravel over a well graded base of limestone. Site 23 was perfectly level. Electric and water hookups were up to date but it's notable that one water tap serves two sites. For some, this will mean that water will be on the curbside of an RV that is backed in. Not a huge deal if you have plenty of hose.

Groceries and supplies require a 20 to 30 minute drive to either Big Pine Key to the south of Marathon Key to the north. Stone Crab comes in season during November and I picked up a dozen for dinner on a dock in Marathon. Key West is about an hour drive south from Bahia Honda and makes a good day trip.

We had good cell phone service via ATT. I was able to use the internet and stream via a high speed data plan.

I looked forward to staying at Bahia Honda since making the reservation a year ahead of time. This State Park met my expectations.

Earl, my canine traveling companion, enjoyed lounging in the breezy weather. Our nightly routine was to sit outside, me with a cocktail in hand, and watch the sunset over the Old Railroad Bridge. The perfect way to end a day in the Florida Keys. I plan on visiting Bahia Honda again some time...but for stays longer than a day...book well in advance.

We grumbled the price of staying here, but it was the cheapest spot in the Keys and after driving past some RV resorts probably the nicest.

We booked at the last minute so got an RV/tent spot and we weren’t able to stake down our tent with aluminum stakes but it was fine. There was a bathroom and showers.

Although some of the park was closed due to hurricane damage, there was a nice beach from which to watch the sunset and an old bridge trail.

Despite the number of people it was very quiet.
