Natural Wonder

Our Take

Located within driving distance from Washington, D.C., Philly, and New York, Assateague Island National Seashore is best known for the small feral horses that roam freely on the beaches (although commonly referred to as “ponies,” the horses owe their diminutive stature to their salt-heavy diet). Don't miss the annual summer fundraiser, when a portion of the horses are escorted by “saltwater cowboys” as they swim to nearby Chincoteague Island.

Go for a long walk on the beach and see wild horses playing in the ocean. The seashore is also a wildlife refuge for wild ponies, and you can camp on the beach with them!

Assateague Island is stunning. Every inch has a view.

It's also completely drivable, which is a bonus. They have scenic stops where you can park, and get out to hike a trail, or walk along the beach.

Wild horses also live on the Island.

Wild horses and camping at the beach or bayside...what a perfect combination! The beach is wide and long. The island is always interesting because of the wild horses and their antics.

With beautiful marshlands and breathtaking views, sit, relax, and enjoy the Atlantic Ocean at Assateague Island. Embrace something new and witness wild Chincoteague ponies wandering the beach in their natural habitat.

We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Maryland!
