“a best-kept secret in Mono County”

Benton Hot Springs (also, Benton, Old Benton, and Hot Springs) is an unincorporated community in Mono County, California. It is located 3 miles (4.8 km) west-southwest of Benton and 31 miles (50 km) north-northwest of Bishop, at an elevation of 5630 feet (1716 m). The Benton post office opened at the place in 1886. The name honors Senator Thomas Hart Benton, United States senator from Missouri. The town saw its heyday from 1862 to 1889 as a supply center for nearby mines. After the close of the 19th century, the town declined and the name Benton was transferred to Benton Station. Of the springs at the site, one was described in a 1915 book as issuing water at 135 °F (57 °C)

The Inn at Benton Hot Springs features 11 Camping Sites with hot tubs that are fed by natural hot springs.

Each feature a private hot tub, picnic table and fire pit. Visitors can pitch a tent or park their camper or RV at the site. No hook-ups. Foliage and Cottonwood trees separate the bathing areas where clothing is optional, although discretion is encouraged.

Sites 1, 2 & 3 are $50 per night, for double occupancy. Each additional person is $10. Sites 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 are $60 per night, for three person occupancy. Each additional person is $10.

If you ever told me I’d pay $60 for a dirt campsite with no hook-ups, I’d have said you were nuts. But ask me if I’d pay the same for a private hot tub fed with 130° water from the local hot springs just outside my RV door and that’s a whole ‘nother ball game. 😊

In addition to the small motel, the Inn at Benton Hot Springs has 10 campsites, each with its own hot tub. The sites are shaded, well-spaced and fencing and vegetation are strategically placed to provide a fair level of privacy. The large tiled tubs can accommodate several people and you can adjust the temp by adjusting the flow of hot water piped into the tub from the hot springs. Heaven!

There is no dump station or hook-ups. Not all sites can accommodate a larger rig, we weren’t asked the size of our RV when we booked the last available space so we were thrilled that we were able to fit. A few sites also have lovely mountain views.

The area around the Inn and the cemetery on the hill are worth a stroll, there are several historic buildings and lots of antique farm equipment.

No Verizon cell service or wifi at the campsites.

No hookups. Dirt lot. No cell service. No dump. Why go here? Evening and morning soak in a private hot tub! It was great! I’d definitely stop here again.

It is absolutely worth the cost of admission! I really recommend staying more than one night because soaking in the middle of the day is fabulous. The people at the inn are great and very helpful.

Benton is beautiful and rugged. There is so much to explore within yards or just a few miles of the Inn at Benton Hot Springs. The location is truly amazing!

The campground is all about soaking in clean, well-built tubs. The water is 140°F at the source and maintained around 105°F at the tubs. The mineral water has no smell of sulphur.

This is dry camping and the nearest dump station is about 40 miles away in Bishop, CA. We were able to get a bar or two of cellular signal near the campground's entrance but nothing inside. The staff is friendly and helpful. They keep the campsites well maintained.

Yes, there are no hookups. Yes, there is no cell signal anywhere. Yes, noise restrictions (yesss!). But this is heaven on earth! The village is an oasis of hot springs, the spring runs through town and keeps everything green and lush. The campsites are reasonably shaded, but ours was less so in the afternoon and it got HOT! But at night sitting in our private hot spring tub gazing at the clearest skies imaginable... and so quiet and peaceful... yes, this is heaven!

This is dry camping at its best with your very own, private hot springs fed tub! The sites are well spaced apart for lot of privacy, beautiful views of the mountains all around. But the best part is the tubs, the water is magical! It is not your typical smelly hot springs water, it naturally has no smell at all! Your skin feels amazing very slippery and soft. Each tub has a spigot so you can control the temperature the water comes out of the ground at 130f and you can find the stream that feeds the entire town (pop 6) on the grounds. If you bump into Kevin on his bike ask him about the water, very interesting conversation. It is a “fur-piece” from anywhere so the night sky is amazing, if you find yourselves in the 395 corridor and you can get a reservation it is worth the detour.

Very private sites with fire pits and bbqs. Clean tubs. And incredibly relaxing. If you’re looking to unplug and relax, this is the place. The best dry camping I’ve ever done.
