“elephant-shaped boulders”
State park features giant granite rocks lined up end-to-end that were formed more than one billion years ago from hot magna.
This place is popular with the locals, who enjoy picnics at the picnic tables scattered below the rocks in the shade. You have to hike a mile in to see the cool red granite "elephant rocks" all in a line. It's definitely worth the walk, which is easy paved path and wheelchair accessible. The rocks at the top are unbelievably huge! I didn't really know what to expect walking in, but it was well worth the 20 miles we drove off route to get there.
Unlike other state parks in Missouri, Elephant Rocks State Park is known primarily for one thing — elephant-shaped boulders. (Shocking, we know.) These enormous rocks are granite, which the state parks site says is something geologists are fascinated by, because the boulders are lined up as if they are elephants on parade.
There are areas for picnicking, a playground, and even a Braille Trail for guests with visual disabilities. That trail even features a former railroad engine house, or what’s left of it anyway, to show visitors a piece of the quarrying and railroad history of the region.
We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Missouri!
Really pretty, and an easy walk. Open until 8pm.
The kids (7, 10, and 12) loved exploring and climbing around in the rocks! Great place for families!!
We stopped by Elephant Rocks State Park on our trip to see the Johnson Shut-Ins and Taum Sauk State Parks. The rocks were a good chance to climb up to get some amazing views of the mountains.
was a fun place to stretch my legs climb some rocks with my family (dogs included). and have lunch
