“Surround yourself by Beautiful Forests!”

Known for its popular camping area, Locust Lake State Park nestles on the side of Locust Mountain. The 52-acre Locust Lake is located between two campgrounds and is surrounded by beautiful forests. Hiking and fishing are popular activities in the 1,772-acre park. Before European Settlers arrived in Pennsylvania, a deep forest of hemlock, white pine, ash, hickory, elm, oak, cherry and American chestnut covered the Locust Valley. The Lenni Lenape claimed the land, then it was conquered by the Susquehannocks, and finally controlled by the New York Iroquois League of Five Nations. When settlers discovered anthracite coal in Schuylkill County, immigrants swiftly arrived for the mining jobs reaching the Locust Valley in the mid-1800s. It was not economically feasible to mine the coal in the Locust Valley, but the area did not escape the American Industrial Revolution. The forests fell to the logger’s ax as sawmills turned the trees into lumber, shingles, tool handles and other wood products. Tanneries crushed hemlock and white pine bark for tanning leather. Colliers burned chestnuts and oaks into charcoal. Strong timbers supported the roofs of mines. The forests were gone by the early 1900s, replaced by shrubby land prone to seasonal floods and forest fires. Some farmers tilled the cleared land. Purchased by the Marshalonis Brothers, the Locust Lake area became a fishing spot and picnic grove. When digging a lake, the brothers found a dam, boards and the hub of a waterwheel under seven feet of leaves, silt and debris. The remains of an old logging mill and dam were buried under silt from flooding and runoff caused by the removal of all of the trees for lumber during the logging era. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the Marshalonis Brothers land in 1966. Locust Lake State Park officially opened on June 10, 1972

We have stayed in this State Park many times. Most sites have electric. There is a nice lake with a beach for swimming. There is a nice paved trail that goes around the lake. The shower houses are old,but well maintained. They have a camp store that is open during the summer or weekends.

We've stayed here before- it's one of the last open parks on our early April trip home to Maine. Off the highway a ways, through a little town, windy roads. Kind of expensive for electric only campsite in a nearly empty park. Sites are a bit rough but 53 is the disabled site so paved well and near enough to the comfort station, though a wheelchair would have a hard time. The comfort station was big, warm and clean. Beautiful trails, well marked, bike/hike trail around the lake, nature hike through the woods- Molly and I enjoyed our walk very much. Friendly staff at the gate.

This park is easy access of Rt. 81. Check-in time at 3 pm is firm. Please note that most sites are quite un-level. As one person noted, handicapped sites were more level (if you need/can get). You will also need to fill your water tank on the way to your site (refer to the map they give you).

We really liked our site as it backed to the lake with a path around for walking, riding bikes. Dogs are allowed and there were many. Summer weekends are teeming with kids so it is a bit noisy during the day. By Sunday night, the park was much quieter.

Cell & internet service was pretty good, probably due to proximity to towns with industry. Don't miss the Yuengling brewery tour (oldest in the US/family owned) - super cool! But, no alcohol allowed in any PA state parks. Bathrooms and bath houses were 'ok'. We'd had alot of rain and with kids it was dirty on floors.

You can rent kayaks for the lake (bring your own! + bikes), there is also trout fishing. Small camp store with local ice cream scooped! Overall, nice park with tent, no electric and electric sites (20/30/50). Dump station on the way out.

We averaged $29 / night for 2 nights for W50. There is a location with potable water to fill your water tank. This is a spectacular area in a beautiful area. The campground is beside a lake that is rated to have the best sunrise in the state. The entire area is heavily wooded and there is a nice paved trail around the lake to walk and bike. The lake also has a small beach for swimming and a boat launch. Our site as all were heavily shaded in the woods with nice spacing between sites. It is very serene and peaceful. The site is dirt and the roads are paved but a bit tight to navigate and back in. The biggest downside is that we could not get level on our site even using several leveling blocks so we could not put our slides out. Even with that drawback, given the spectacular location, we would stay here again!

Our site was great. nice little lake . If you have a paddle board or kayak then you will enjoy it. Was nice and quiet at night. If you are looking to get away for some solitude this is probably not the place, at least on the weekends. Lots of families and kids. there is a beach area for swimming at the lake and it is really loud all day. If you are camping with a group then this place is great. Google maps gave us a strange route to get here through some back roads. This place is right off the 61 and seemed like a much easier drive.

Arrived on a Friday afternoon in a 40ft class A. Booked a site we couldn't fit in due to overhanging branches, but we were able to find the last possible site on a busy Father's Day weekend. Lake was small but had 2 boat ramps and easy access with a public beach area. Sites were a decent size and not on top of each other but had some grade to them as they sloped towards the lake. Bath houses were average, nothing special with a wash station that was nice. I would stay again but try to get a site along the lake. Only 2 loops of campground allowed pets so that limited our choices since we travel with 2 dogs.

This campground is quite nice. Some sites have electric hookups but water is only available at spigots throughout the campground. There is a paved path around the lake which is also part of a larger 3 1/2 mile trail. The longer trail includes a walk through the woods but beware some parts are not well marked. My site took me a lot of effort to get level (or close to) but it was near the lake so worth the trouble. My Verizon signal was just okay but my AT&T was very good. The bathroom near me was antiquated and made me grateful for the tiny but functional one in my RV. The nights were quiet but for nature sounds. In fact, I was rudely awakened by a very loud owl in the middle of the night! I'd never heard one so near and loud. I believe I was in a pet free loop so I guess that made it quieter. The lake is small but easily accessible for boating and or fishing. I never had any contact with either the host or park staff so cannot comment on that. There is a camp store that looked pretty well stocked.

Although we arrived late in the day, there were several walk up spots still available for a midweek stay. We chose a spot with lake views and in the morning we were rewarded with lovely sights. Our spot (35) backed up to the paved lake trail and were able to enjoy bike rides and walks around the lake. This was a pet friendly site and the pup enjoyed her time here, especially seeing the resident ducks that freely roamed nearby occupied sites looking for handouts. The bathrooms and showers are showing signs of age and could be cleaner, but were acceptable. Getting water was bit more challenging as water spigots were not abundant in the campground. Checkout time was generous at 3 pm, which afforded us a leisurely morning to enjoy our brief stay. Would enjoy returning for a longer visit.

The lake and surrounding rolling hills are beautiful. It’s too bad the campground has been neglected for years. This was our first experience with the Pennsylvania State Park system and it was abysmal. Once in the state park, the signage to even find one’s way to the CG was nonexistent. Note: The campground is heavily wooded with very little direct sun. Once at our campsite, we had to ask someone to move their car – they had just arbitrarily parked in our site. We backed into our site and didn’t unhook our rig since we were passing through and spending one night. Good thing because leveling our rig would have been almost impossible. We were on at least a 4-5% grade. The picnic table in our site had not seen sun or any TLC for approximately 50 years and it was as heavy as a tank. The bathrooms were heavily used, filthy and hadn’t been cleaned in days. This is all such a shame because one can see that the campground probably used to be beautiful, with a good amount of space between each site. We didn’t check out the showers after seeing how gross the bathrooms were. The campground had an adequate dump facility, which we used. We will not stay at this campground again.

There is a lot to love about this lake. If you have kids, there is a paved bike/walking path around the lake. One lap is about 1 mile. The lake and nearby stream offer fishing, and there are boats to rent or you can bring your own. The camp store has sundry items as well as delicious ice cream from a local creamery. There are a couple of miles of hiking trails with a few trails offering some steeper grades. We normally see park rangers making rounds throughout the evening, but this year we only saw them the day we were leaving. Despite the lack of ranger presence, our fellow campers were quiet and respectful. The only downside for RV/TT campers is the tightness of the sites. All the sites are wooded and some of them can be a very tight fit. We had no issues on this trip, but I did see a 5th wheel in site 061 that took about 15 minutes to back in, as there was only about a foot of clearance between his 5th wheel and a tree on the shore side of his rig. You will also need plenty of leveling blocks as most of the sites are on a grade. But even with all that, we still go back every year.
