“a peaceful retreat in the woods”

Blackwoods Campground is located on the east side of Mount Desert Island, about 5 miles (8 km) south of Bar Harbor on Route 3. All sites at Blackwoods are wooded and within a 10-minute walk of the ocean. The majority of Blackwoods' sites are for small and large tents; other sites can accommodate travelers with RVs. Flush toilets, running water, and a dump station are provided, as are picnic tables and fire rings. Roads are paved.

There are only two National Park Campgrounds, and this one is my favorite of the two. Close to Bar Harbor and to the most popular parts of the Park.

Very wooded campground that can accommodate most trailers and RVs. There are no hookups, but the facilities are clean and friendly.

Location is pretty central, and convenient.

We reserved two nights at Blackwoods via the recreation.gov website for mid October 2016 (no hookups available). We had a late arrival (after 9pm) but called in advance to see what the instructions were. She told us on the phone our site # and to come check in the next morning. Our site was a long narrow back in site (which we saved the backing in for the daylight so just went in head first). The woods are pretty dark, your neighbors are lightly obscured with vegetation and spaced out which was nice. It's a mix of deciduous trees and evergreens. Road loops were paved and the campsites were gravel. The bathrooms were very nice with electrical outlets, but all cold water. Bathroom building also had a dish water rinse station (to collect food scraps as there are racoon issues). In section A of the campground you can access a trail easily from the B section and head up to Cadillac Mountain or one of the vistas before Cadillac. Perhaps the best perk of this campground is the short walk to the ocean views! Just a short 5 minute walk from our site to the ocean view and suddenly you're out of the dark woods! There is another ocean view trail that goes to Seal Bay that is longer. I don't recall if we had cell service but possibly.

I stayed here in early October. I did grab one of the last few spots available, but it was nearly full. If you call before noon to check availability, you'll get yelled at. I liked this place, but I really only came here to sleep one night so I sadly don't have any site recommendations. Neighbors are very close, but trees do a half-decent job of obscuring on three sides. People run generators during the day, which is pretty obnoxious, but turned off by 10pm.

It is difficult to reach the campground. If you take a wrong turn, you could end up on this big maze of roads and detoured for half an hour. Take your time, and follow directions. That said, the roads are good quality.

I would stay here again, and probably book several nights and use it as a basecamp if I could spend more time in Acadia.

Had a wonderful stay In a spotlessly clean campground with walking trails leading down to the sea. There are no hookups which I've realized now is probably not a good thing because you are subject to others who can't seem to survive without power all day. Annoying!

Wooded area with semi private sites. Bathrooms were very clean. About a mile bike ride or drive to private showers ($2 for 4 minutes). The free park shuttle bus came right to the campground- we used the bus system quite a bit to get around the island. We highly recommend the bus system and blackwoods campground!

They pack 'em in here, but spots are easy enough to maneuver and you're right in the park with bike access to the park loop, free bus service, or a quick drive to the Jordan Pond side entry. A little steep for dry camping, and expect to use your generator since the trees shade out solar in almost all spots, but there's nothing else in the vicinity for the price and convenience.

No Verizon service here, but AT&T had 2 bars and was usable. We went into town (Northeast Harbor is 10 min down the road and is a sweet, quiet town) when we needed faster wifi.

Echoing off of most reviews here - this is a great campground for visitors to Acadia National Park. With over 300 sites to choose from, the campground effectively accommodates the busy traffic that can besiege the park but never felt overly crowded in late June. Not sure if this changes in July/August though.

The campground is a short drive away from many of the main attractions/hikes within the park - including Bubble Rock, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain. Plus if you are a fan of ocean sunrises there is a short trail that leads to the rocky coastline if you can wake up early enough.

The only negative - a little pricey for a campground without showers. Be sure to check out Bar Harbor if you want a break from hiking.

Sites aren’t level and lack privacy screening between sites but the campground is so convenient to Acadia & also on the free Bean bus route to get around Island. There are no services- electric or cell service. Many RVs using generators due to no electricity which can be noisy. Many sites were small and larger RVs may not fit. Bathrooms were clean with flush toilets. Blackwoods was convenient to all sides of the island and Bar Harbor

Paid Showers and small camp store are not far from campground.

Stayed 7 nights at Blackwoods in mid-Sept of 2018. Our site was real shady and a fairly un-level site. Our only power source is solar so that was a challenge to keep the batteries charged for 7 nights. Positives far out-weigh the negatives. On the positive side: About a 5-10 minute walk to the ocean, plenty of clean bathrooms in the campground. A 5 minute walk to pick up the free bus service. The 4 streets that are available for RV's were full most of the week. Two of the streets the sites were very shady and not level. The other two streets were fairly level and more open for solar use. One of the main hiking trails off Cadillac Mtn follows a ridge back to the campground. The main negative is that 80% of the campground is for tent campers only. And many of those are huge level sites. We will return only if I can reserve one of the few level RV sites. This was our first time there and we did reserve 6 months ahead of time. Most of the Class A or B RV's ran their generators a few hours during the day. No big deal. We camped in a 28' travel trailer. We had the National Park Access Card so we got 50% off the $30 nightly rate.

Busy campgrounds, sites are close from each other...but was quiet. A lots of great trails from the campground. A very important think to know, this campground does not have any showers facilities. You have to go 1miles on the main road and pay 2$ for 8minutes. Hot shower but not very clean. Overall...I would go back.
