“A piece of Texas history”
You have just entered a unique piece of Texas history Austinites are proud to call their own. Originally an ornamental Iron Work shop owned and operated by the Weigl family, this little tin building was converted into The Iron Works BBQ in 1978. Shortly after opening their doors, the State Historical Commission registered the property as a historical site, honoring the Weigls and their legacy.
A friend brought us here- we tried the beef brisket, chopped beef tips (yum!), sausage and rib. They have either set dinners (1 meat and 2 sides you pick), meat by the pound, sandwiches or a sampler tray... plus about 7-10 sides (but strangely, no baked beans!). It is essentially self serve- you order at the counter, get food plate, select your drink and desert then pay and seat yourself. For deserts they had a few different types in small clear containers, ready to go. Takeout here would be super easy! We all enjoyed the food. It wasn't the absolute best Bbq we had, but that place isn't here... and we were all happy with the meal quantity, flavor and quality of the meats too.
Local favorite, and a favorite of George Bush when he was governor. but coming from out of town I was not that impressed, but again when I was there it was 105 and they did not have the Chillers on, so that may have had something to do with it. Give it a try.
Visiting Austin this week and asked some locals for good bbq. We were recommended Ironworks a few days ago and happened to be in the area. It was definitely worth the walk. The pulled pork was juicy and delicious. The mac and cheese was so good. But the sweet corn was to die for! Great view if you sit outside. Would return if I have the chance.
Good location with loads of charm-- think paper plates and a menu on a chalkboard. The brisket and beef ribs are kind of their thing here but they have pulled pork and pork ribs and sausage too, which I appreciate. Sides are fine, and they have cold beer and a great patio!
