“Nestled in a Pecan Grove”
"The park is home to many longtime monthly renters and offers a limited number of daily-use pads as well. Call way in advance (it's so old-school they don't even have a website). Pecan Grove is literally in a pecan grove – an old Austin respite smack dab in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Barton Springs Road's restaurant row. And since neighbor Shady Grove RV Park was mowed down to make way for condos a few years back, it's the last of its kind." -the Austin Chronicle

If you are incredibly boring or stuffy this place is not for you. This is more of a community place and it has its quirkiness but thats what makes Austin what it is. If you expect this park to be like every KOA just head back up to Dallas, you probably wont like Austin anyway.
What more is there to say then Pecan Grove has an absolutely stellar location. OK, if you want more, then read on.
Pecan Grove RV Park is not the nicest RV park you will find, but who cares? It sits on a prime piece of real estate on Barton Springs Road, right in the heart of the South Austin action. You can walk to Zilker park (just a couple blocks to the west). Downtown is just across Lady Bird Lake via a pedestrian bridge. Speaking of the lake, Pecan Grove offers excellent access to the jog/walk/bike trail around the lake. And there are the restaurants/bars/food trucks within a couple of blocks of the park.
If you are feeling like walking a bit further, South Congress, South First and South Lamar are all within 1/2 to 1.5 miles away. You can walk through residential neighborhoods, or along the busy streets - your choice.
So the good is the location and access to all that is cool about South Austin.
The bad is that Pecan Grove is an old park with some small spaces. It is noisy (go figure, being in the heart of the action), especially if you are up front like I was. I had a space that backed up to Uncle Billy’s BBQ and Brewery right next door and they liked to start beer making activity really early. One morning I was awoken at 3am by banging and clanging. I guess that is what ear plugs were invented for! :)
It is also hard to get into Pecan Grove as there are only 12 transient sites available. The rest if full of full time residences. I inquired how long the wait was for a month-to-month spot (I would kill to live there, right next to condos that go for up to $1 million - great part of town) and was told several years. Bob, the manager, informed me that there are only three ways a spot opens up. Death, divorce, or job relocation. He said there are people who have been there upwards of 30 years and you could tell this from the age and condition of some of the rigs. Let me tell ya, the full time residences really get creative with decorating their spaces. Mostly in a good way.
If you want to stay in the heart of the Austin action, and can actually get a reservation, give Pecan Grove a shot.
I paid $250 a week plus $40 for the additional night.
Cell signals are unboosted, but my Verizon was a bit flakey.
Overall 5 stars for, you guessed it, location, location, location.

Camping in an RV park that's walkable to downtown is pretty special. With only 12 rentals spots, you should book ahead. This park is mostly filled with full-timers, which gave me a sense of community and security. The restrooms are not fancy, but are adequate. Zilker Park is close, as well as many restaurants. A great choice for urban camping.

Can't believe I've never reviewed this place here but...
It's awesome. If you travel a lot you should have heard about its grandeur by now.
Tough to get in, but once you're in, if they like you, you can usually stay for as long as you'd like. Our last time around we got a permanent spot...the day before we decided to leave. Oh well, enjoy!

The sites here are cramped but you can't beat the location. Laundry facilities were pretty decent ($1 for each load with washer and dryer) and showers were decent as well. It's all about being able to walk into various parts of town from this spot.
Warning: cell service/wifi for working out of the rig is TERRIBLE and can't be trusted.

If your rig is around 21 feet or less, you will fit in site 4 which is one of their "overflow" sites - the other three overflow sites are very close to the street. A nice restaurant on the other side of the fence but not overly noisy, and not late at night. We LOVED our spot - see pic.

If you've stayed at RV parks around the country, you would know the Pecan Grove is unique.
While the amenities are standard and sites are small there is one thing about this park that causes it's long waiting list, location location location. Nestled right in the middle of downtown Austin neighboring high rise apartment buildings is this little park that has 50-60% permenant residents. Once you drive past the main building you'll feel like you're in a neighborhood. We walked everywhere while staying here. 15 minute walk to gorgeous Barton Springs pool, 20 minute walk to downtown Austin. Additionally, Thom's Market is right at the entrance of the park and has all your basics.
Some people complain about the service and amenities, but when you stay here, you're staying here for convenience. Bathroom's and laundry isn't the cleanest and grounds are pretty basic. We had fine service, owner bikes around the park and is in the office most of the time. There are a lot of rules, but nothing too crazy.
We were super lucky and able to get a week long stay at super short notice. We had to move once in order to stay that long, but if you call and offer up that option the owner may try to get you in.

Can't get a better location than Pecan Grove for visiting Austin! Weekly rates for 30AMP are $270, 50AMP are more. Daily/weekly sites are a packed close together but you won't want to stay in your trailer when the whole city is your backyard anyways.
Pros:
- Within close walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops and breweries (Shady Grove is good, Austin Java awesome, Billy's Brewery good for beer only)
- Cheap! Like, can't believe I scored this deal cheap!
- Laundry on site.
- A nice peek into what "old Austin" was like. You will meet many long term residents here (some 30+ years!) and their unique lawn ornaments.
- Right at the start of the Lady Bird walking path! Perfect 3 mile loop for a nice jog :) Plus, a park area to let the pup run around.
Cons:
- Our site was meh. We were squeezed between 2 other nightly/weekly sites in an island in the middle of the park road.
We were tempted to pick our long term spot and plant some yard flamingos and call this place home. It is that convenient! Hope to be able to visit again!

The reason to stay here is location! You can easily ride your bike around the city from here. The people were very friendly and we had a great stay! That said, the sites are small and it’s close to the road. We had to share our sewer hook up with the adjoining site. The laundry was only about a dollar/load. I understand that the cost/night can very greatly depending on what’s going on in Austin (SXSW).
