“Live in a piece of modern art”
Sometimes referred to as "The Home Home", this incredible piece of architecture by William Morgan is a two story, two bedroom apartment built into a sand dune on Atlantic Beach, Florida. Built in 1975, this strange abode consists of two 750 square-foot apartments with one bathroom each and numerous built-in furnishings to accommodate the building's odd shape. "I built it like a seashell," Morgan says of the home. "It's a little like being in a submarine. When you go down the stairs, you go along the curved side of the shell to descend into the main living area, which looks out through very large glass doors onto the oceanfront. So you have a sense of being in the dune and looking out onto the Atlantic Ocean." Built as a kind of "zen space", the building maintains a steady 70 degree temperature thanks to a grass roof, and is so well-soundproofed inside that you can't even hear a heavy rain. When rising property taxes and a lack of interested renters forced Williams to put his beloved creation on the market, it sat for a handful of years before finding an interested buyer in 2012. The building sold for 1.2 million to a South Florida couple who were fans of William's design work. They have stated there are no plans to change the quirky local landmark.
