“fully restored wooden grain elevator”

The JH Hawes Grain Elevator, built in 1904 & in operation until 1976, is the only fully restored wooden grain elevator in Illinois. Museum interprets grain storage & the shipping industry as it existed in the first half of the 20th Century. In the heart of our nation's cornbelt, just a block off Historic Rt. 66, you can discover your connection to Illinois' rich grain producing, storing, and shipping history by visiting the J. H. Hawes Grain Elevator Museum. Since 1987, the Atlanta community has worked to preserve the Hawes Elevator as part of its agricultural history. Looking back after nearly 20 years of preservation work, it may appear that the need and desire to save the Elevator was a foregone conclusion — something easily decided and done.
