“set in a beautiful glacial basin”
Mowich Lake is set in a glacial basin surrounded by fragile wildflower meadows, and is the largest and deepest lake in Mount Rainier National Park. The road is unpaved after the first three miles and may be rough. It is generally open mid-July to mid-October. Mowich is reached via State Route 165. The Mowich area provides a gateway to spectular sub-alpine lakes and meadows. Sub-alpine meadows are very sensitive to disturbance, so please stay on the trails at all times.

We stayed here one night helping facilitate my niece and her husband who were walking the Wonderland Trail in three days. They had a wilderness permit so could camp in designated spots. Very small walk-in campsite only for tents on a lake and you need a permit or possibly first come first serve for the other small area to camp. It was very high up and rather misty and cold that day that we did some hiking, while we waited for them to come rolling in after their 20 to 30 some mile hike. There is a bathroom with just a toilet and recyclable trash areas and was it was clean and I’m glad we were in our revel in a parking lot because my sister who slept in their designated site said it was a rather loud down there but I think that depends upon who’s actually camping. The parking lot was very crowded we had to park way up the road but as the hikers came in and took their cars we were able to move our vehicle down very close to where you walk in. They have a wheelbarrow to facilitate all your gear. But a lot of cars never left because people park their cars and hike the Wonderland Trail or segments of it for days. We did a day hike up to spray Meadows or spray trail and make sure that you go over to spray Falls and go across the bridge across the creek river and you will see some tremendous falls gorgeous.
